decluttering photos & office files

I got another 2 boxes filled with stuff put into hubby's car so he can ride it over to Salvation Army next week.

I have gone through an entire large box of photos from 1998-present last week into this weekend.

Got them all organized by date and I've thrown out tons of fuzzy, out of focus, duplicate ones and filled 2 empty photo albums I had here so I am done up to June of 2000. I'll prolly need 1 more album(the bulk of the pics were from 98-00 so I'm almost done!). If I don't find one in all this eBay stuff I still have, I'll have to break down and buy an album soon. I've been meaning to get to this photo mess since moving here in 2000. I am still on the fence about carting around all those negatives too though.

I also went through 2 large hanging files filled with product warranties/instructions/care & use booklets. I couldn't believe how many old papers from stuff we no longer have or expired warranties I was able to purge.lol I separated the major appliances and other papers for the house from the kid's electronics/small appliances, etc. papers so if something goes kerflooey, we can find the pertinent papers easier.

Now there's an empty drawer in the file cabinet for hubby to fill up with his stuff.lol

After I get all these stacks of photos off the dining room table, I can get all the tax stuff started......oh goody! Well.....more like oh no, not again!.....lol

Did anybody else do any simplifying this week?

Go Sluggy go! ;-)This week I've been going thru my dresser drawers. I have a bag full of pants to donate, and I still have some more pairs to try on before I have someone run it over to one of the local thrift stores. I broke down and put in the bag a couple of suits from my banking days that I haven't been able to let go of, lol. I also found a drawer full of pajamas I forgot I had, so I need to go thru them too. I even got Kail to put some stuff in the bag, hee hee!

My problem is that I swing between two sizes, so I've been hanging onto everything. It's time to pare down to what I really "need" as opposed to what I have in both sizes.

Next weekend, we're (Kail) going to work on dismantling the pool. That'll free up valuable space so I can grow more veggies, yay!

Anyone else got any simplifying stories to report? :-)Cyndi

Simplifying for me is an ongoing process. I always have a bag that is being filled for the Mission. When it gets full, I donate it. I also sell things online and trade things online for "useful" things I need. I know several of us have followed the Fly Lady over the years. I was a devoted Fly Baby about 4-5 years ago. I never followed the regime strictly by the rules-well, I did try to in the beginning. After a while, I just adapted her teachings to my own routine.

One thing I've learned is that my house is NOT going to be uncluttered over night, lol. It's a matter of small battles on a daily basis, looking for opportunities to throw things out, organize things, use things up, etc. I'm a big fan of keeping boxes in the garage for different things-stuff to throw away, stuff to give away, stuff to freecycle, etc. This has made my decluttering so much easier. :-)Cyndi

You are right about it being an ongoing process. And it's always worse if

you have kids & /or a significant other living with you.

Stuff is always going to come into your home so you have to keep the

pipeline open so other things can flow out in equal proportions.....or you

get a backup of stuff. Thank goodness I pulled the plug on my stopped up

drain before I drowned in the stuff.lol

LOLOL....I just threw away today's mail too.... LOL

Seriously though, I gave away (to AM Vets) most of my 56 pairs of pants that I never wore, last summer. I also gave them most of the tops. My closet looks so much better ;)

Mine is looking great too. It still needs work (translation=stuff I can't bear to get rid of yet, lol) but it's under control now. Seriously, I have some stuff from back in the 80's, no lie! Not a lot, but a couple things. Like I said before, for me, sentimental value clutter is the worst of all. LOL. I think I even still have one of my prom dresses from the 70's.

Now Peter Walsh-that Clean Sweep guy- would make you do 1 of 2

things....either take a picture of the prom gown and frame & hang the photo

OR make something out of the gown fabric to keep as a memento to display in

a place of honor.

Either way beats having it take up space in your closet, right? ;-))

That's what I mean Cyndi....if it is only a few, then, I don't see why you have to deprive yourself of keeping them? If I was you, I would keep them but try not to accumulate too many of them because they ALL can not be of sentimental value.

By coincidence-I've been planning to cut up my wedding dress, lol. I have part of my grandmothers wedding dress, and it is a similar color-creams-and I had no idea what to do with it, so I decided to make a quilt out of it. That idea progressed to include MY wedding dress, since no one else will ever wear it. Now I just have to work up the nerve to actually cut them up, lol. Once I can do that, then I'll try my hand at making the quilt.

The prom dress is blue, so I don't want to use it in the wedding dress quilt. I should just give it away, but I don't want to keep it and I don't want to give it away, rofl!

I don't think compacting is about giving away items you have if you love them.. To me it is about using these to their best advantage by displaying them or with clothes making something else out of them To me compacting is really about now buying more stuff but one can still appreciate what one has.

True! But beyond compacting, many of us wish to live a " simpler "

life, where we don't have so much " stuff. " When my kids have moved

out of the house, I want to immediately move to a much smaller house

on more land out in the country. I'm preparing my life now for what I

want it to be in my " dream " home.

The compacting portion of that comes in by not buying any " new

stuff. " Decluttering is VERY compact-y, because I am passing on stuff

to other people who don't want to buy new stuff too. :-)

Cyndi,

Don't move to a smaller house too quickly. My daughter is home more now than

she ever was when she lived here. And now she's got family (fiance and 2 big

dogs) that are here EVERY weekend.

And what about when they all decide they really should've stayed at home?

And guest rooms for when all of us decide we should stay at your house. We

like your nice clutter free house!

LOL! I have 4 bedrooms and an office now, and believe me, we use every square inch. Hard to believe, isn't it? And VERY hard to imagine living in something smaller, lol.

We'll be stuck here for a while. Both kids have already decided to remain here for the long haul, lol-at least, til they get out of college. But in the meantime, we're going to look for land next spring, and something cheap to live in on it, so we'll be prepared when the time comes. You can do anything with propane and a generator, rofl!!

There was a show on HGTV the other day about a couple who moved an old fixer-upper house onto some land they owned. I would love to do that! I love old houses so much, and I'm SURE they can be retrofitted with solar panels, lol. If Ed could do it, so can I, lol! I'm sure my family thinks they are experiencing Living With Cyndi these days. ;-)

And Joe, you're welcome here ANYTIME-just bring a sleeping bag, lol. ;-)Cyndi

Cyndi, Don't move to a smaller house too quickly. My daughter is home more now thanshe ever was when she lived here. And now she's got family (fiance and 2 bigdogs) that are here EVERY weekend. And what about when they all decide they really should've stayed at home? And guest rooms for when all of us decide we should stay at your house. We like your nice clutter free house!joe---Received: Thu, 01 Mar 2007 02:10:10 PM CST"cyndik2" <cyndikrallRealSimple Subject: [RealSimple] Re: decluttering photos & office filesTrue! But beyond compacting, many of us wish to live a "simpler" life, where we don't have so much "stuff." When my kids have moved out of the house, I want to immediately move to a much smaller house on more land out in the country. I'm preparing my life now for what I want it to be in my "dream" home. The compacting portion of that comes in by not buying any "new stuff." Decluttering is VERY compact-y, because I am passing on stuff to other people who don't want to buy new stuff too. :-)CyndiRealSimple , "Ann Connolly" <anndconnolly wrote:>> I don't think compacting is about giving away items you have if you love> them..
