Guest guest
Let me start of by saying this: I'm short. My Family is shorter, My mothers 5'1 " , my aunt is probably 5'1.5 " , I'm 5'2 " . Of course I have a lovely stool that I use in the kitchen, because frankly, I could never reach the top shelves without it. But when I look in my closets, 1. Everything above my head is cluttered and unorganized. 2. This wastes so much space. I have a small apartment, and I've always lived in small houses, wasting space seems so wrong. 3. There is allot of empty space above my head, while I'm trying to stuff everything into the small space that I can easily reach. Does anyone else share this frustration, and if so what have you done about it? I'm sure the answer is going to go along the lines of use a stool, and.. Thanks, Allegra
Guest guest
I feel your pain, Allegra! I come from a short family too and I am 4 ft. 11 in. on a good day, LOL! The majority of my cupboard and closet space is totally useless for me so I let Roman store his stuff up there. What I REALLY hate is going to the grocery store and not being able to reach canned goods on the top shelf. Guest guest
Cee, you are not suppose to buy ANY can goods which are not "goods" at all.... Guest guest
I'm weighing in on this one, as I'm 5'2 " . I resorted to buying one of those grabber things so I can get things from high places w/out a stool....tho I do have stools aplenty here too!lol The only problem with grabbers is that you can't grab things that weigh over a certain amount, b/c it's not strong enough to hold it. But it helps for lightweight things like some linens and boxes/cans in the pantry.....it doesn't help with getting down dishes much.lol I saw a show once where the wife was short so they redid her kitchen to accomodate her....like no high cabinets. All her storage was under counter height. Of course the kitchen was huge and cost a fortune to redo so that doesn't help most people. I should start taking that grabber thing to the grocery store with me!! It would help save me the trouble of having to grab a mop handle out of the cleaning aisle to poke at things on high shelves I need. ;-) sluggy I feel your pain, Allegra! Guest guest
I know exactly what you are going thru. I'm 5' 1/2 " . Getting too old to get on the stepstool to reach high items. Arthitis in both knees and it seems like every thing I need had been put on a high shelf, thanks to my kids. The shelf above the sink, refrigerator and stove are all out of reach, so completely useless to me. Seasonal items go there. Can just barely reach the second shelf of the cabinets. At the store, anything on a high shelf stays there. I have two different reachers. One is the standard type with the claw that works pretty well, the other is the fold down type that has suction cups. Each serves that purpose, generally but if its heavy, it stays where it is until one of my boys comes around. My bottom cabinets are stuffed and the top ones are close to empty. When my son was 6 or 7 we were going somewhere and he saw this huge truck with the huge picture of a Wonder Bread on the side. He looked at it and said: "I wonder how does it keep people alive....." Guest guest
No way, Barbara...I'm not the nagging type, LOL! He knows crap like white bread isn't good for him but he chooses to eat it anyway. <shrugs shoulders> It's his choice. He also smokes. I drink martinis instead of choosing a " healthier " glass of red wine with my dinner...but he doesn't judge me and I don't judge him. I choose to lead by example instead of with a hammer. I've found that " reluctant " recruits or those who are " guilted " into doing something they don't want to do are often resentful participants and they don't stick with the program. If he sees me eating " healthier " food and enjoying it, he sometimes asks for a bite, which opens the door to constructive, non-threatening dialogue and possibly more acceptance. <smiles> --Celia-- RealSimple , " Barbara " <barbara3 wrote: > > Ohhhh, OK then LOL.... > > When my son was 6 or 7 we were going somewhere and he saw this huge truck with the huge picture of a Wonder Bread on the side. > He looked at it and said: " I wonder how does it keep people alive..... Guest guest
Well, I am a giant (5'4") ROFL! But I have step ladders all over the place-one in my closet, one downstairs, and one outside. I keep as much as I can on the upper shelves-anything I don't use on a daily basis. I couldn't function without the step ladders. My closet has very high shelves too. Guest guest
Oh, I hear ya there! My ex-husband ate like your BIL...all junk food and nary a vegetable of fruit. No wonder he had his first heart attack in his 40's! Luckily Roman "largely" eats a healthy diet...lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, and nuts in addition to whole milk, real butter and healthy portions of meat, cheese, etc. He is a good cook and makes almost everything from scratch and usually packs his own lunch. He does eat some junk when on the road (pop, chips, candy bars, etc.), and does occasionally pop open a can of Spaghetti-O's. But THANK GOD his diet is seriously much better than most men's. We had a long talk yesterday about not trusting the microwave and about renewing our commitment to get rid of the non-stick pans and go all cast iron as soon as we can afford to. It was brought on by a friend telling us the wonders of crockpot liners and what an easy clean-up it is, to which I told him I would not use them due to the plastic and chemicals leaching into the food. He agreed, and we had some great dialogue about modern chemicals and toxins in food, so he is coming along. Don't know if I'll ever break him of his Spaghetti-O's habit, but he would have no problem eating raw milk and butter should I find a trusted supply... --Cee-- Sluggy wrote: >> I say eating crap will even catch up with men too....eventually.My idiot BIL(we don't call him an idiot for this, but for many other things.lol).... Guest guest
50 lbs!!!! That's amazing! Well, maybe he's not hopeless after all, lol. Kail doesn't have too many hobbies. He does like to hike, so we're looking forward to some outdoor time when I get some strength back. We also got a Jeep Wrangler last year for some offroading. I'm definitely not up to that yet either, lol! One of the great things about northern CA is all the outdoor places to enjoy. Looks like we have to visit the Inlaws in March, so I'm looking forward to a mini vacation. It's my SIL last year coming to CA for the winter, so it's my last chance to have somewhere free to visit, lol. Cyndi In a message dated 2/11/2007 11:22:57 P.M.
