Yes, definitely the coconut oil is by far the best for your health as long as it is virgin an/or centrifuged.

Mary Enig's book "Eat fat, Lose Fat" talks about it and says that CO is a close second in health giving properties after the raw cream butter. Butter is still The healthiest fat there is.

What Oil Should You be Cooking With, and Which Should You Avoid?

By Dr. Joseph Mercola with Rachael Droege

Anytime you cook a food you run the risk of creating heat-induced damage. Well, suppose there was a type of oil that is stable enough to resist heat-induced damage and so beneficial that it helps you lose weight, promotes heart health and helps to maintain normal cholesterol levels. Would you choose to use this oil?

If you said yes then you will want to get some coconut oil today. Naturally, when choosing an oil to cook with you want an oil that will not be damaged by high cooking temperatures. Of all the available oils, in my opinion, coconut oil is the oil of choice for cooking because it is nearly a completely saturated fat, which means it is much less susceptible to damage when it is heated.

Although mainstream media portrays olive oil as the healthiest oil, this title does not extend to cooking. Olive oil is primarily a monounsaturated fat. This means that it has one double bond in its fatty acid structure. Although a monounsaturated fat is inherently more stable than a polyunsaturated fat, the overabundance of oleic acid in olive oil creates an imbalance on the cellular level, which has been associated to an increased risk of breast cancer and heart disease. Olive oil is a smart fat to include in your diet in a non-heated form, however.

In my opinion, polyunsaturated oils, which include vegetable oils like corn, soy, safflower and canola, are the worst oils to cook with because of the trans-fatty acids introduced during the hydrogenation process, which results in increased dangers of chronic diseases such as breast cancer and heart disease.

As you can see in the chart below, coconut oil contains the most saturated fat of all edible oils. Don't be scared away by the negative view of 'saturated fat' portrayed by the media. Many studies have shown that a low-fat diet is not the answer for preventing heart disease, and some scientists are calling for new dietary guidelines that reflect this discovery. To really understand the benefits of saturated fat, I suggest you read Dr. Mary Enig and Sally Fallon's article "The Truth About Saturated Fat" to first dispel any lingering notions you may have that all saturated fats are dangerous.

So anytime you need an oil to cook with, coconut oil can automatically be used in place of butter, margarine, olive oil or any other type of oil in all types of recipes. However, coconut oil can vary widely in terms of the types of coconuts used, the manufacturing processes used to make the oil, and more, and all of these factors play a major role in the effectiveness of the oil.

Most commercial coconut oils are refined, bleached and deodorized (RBD) and contain chemicals used in processing.

Because of these variations my team and I here researched coconut oil extensively until we found the ideal source. I now highly recommend and offer you what is clearly the premier brand of virgin coconut oil in the United States, Fresh Shores. This virgin coconut oil is not only certified organic, but it also met all our other requirements, including no GMO ingredients, bleaching, deodorizing, refining or hydrogenation. Fresh Shores also uses fresh coconuts (not "copra" or dried coconuts like most oils) that come from a rural region of the Philippines untainted by urban pollution.

I urge you to try this virgin coconut oil for all of your cooking oil needs and experience the health benefits and great taste for yourself. If you do choose another brand, please be sure that it meets these requirements.

Sluggy, there are REAMS of paper and internet space devoted to nothing BUT coconut oil, lol. I broke down and ordered a bottle, because I needed some more Hemp oil, and the same company I buy from had both. I can search thru my Fav's to locate some internet articles, but the best book to get is Eat Fat, Lose Fat with the Coconut Oil Diet, by Mary Enig and Sally Fallon. And neither of them sell coconut oil, I believe, so I am not skeptical of their ulterior motives...

Barbara,

It is hard to find info on the benefits of tropical oils simply because the only ones that have a "motivation" to promote it are those that sell it, unfortunately. Most university, hospital and independent studies are underwritten by corporations and drug companies with an incentive to find a "scientific" selling point for their product. A perfect example of that would be the drug companies that 'invented' manufactured hormones for post menopausal women way back in the 1930's. The drug companies sponsored huge studies that were--by today's vision--clearly flawed to make their drugs look good. World-wide announcements were made about how much it helped to relieve post-menopausal symptoms (true), keep skin young and lovely (debatable), and prevent cancer, strokes and heart attacks (WRONG!). These same companies actually sponsored free text books for medical students of the era, complete with promotional material for their hormone drugs. (Yes, the medical schools allowed them to do this.) They went on to make BILLIONS of dollars over 50 or 60 years (not positive on the time frame) until the first unbiased, independent government study proved it wrong. (See link for Women's Health Initiative.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women's_Health_Initiative

The portion of the Women's Health Initiative study pertaining to hormone "therapy" was actually cut off prematurely for the safety of the patients involved when it became clear that long term hormone use was dangerous to one's health.

But I digress...

Back to coconut oil. Like you, I cast a jaundiced eye upon info provided by the seller as it's in their best interest to cast their product in the best light possible. That said, there are no huge corporations to underwrite a big study to "prove" coconut oil to be safe and healthy, but there is a growing body of evidence (and slow acceptance amongst the medical and scientific community) that is continuing to gather strength. As more and more manufactured foods and artificial drugs are being exposed for the commercially promoted fraud that they actually are, (yes, that's a harsh description, but how else would you describe it?), professionals are rethinking these issues. I was lucky enough to have had a progressive professor who was light years before his time while studying dietary issues in college, so much so that I am convinced that the coconut oil/olive oil/butter thing Mercola talks about is true. I don't believe it because he says so...I just happen to agree with him.

Whew! Enough for today. I have been buying my coconut products from this Wilderness Family Naturals for some time now, and I find them to be reputable, reliable and often a buck or so cheaper for the same quality products one might find elsewhere: http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com/

Warm Regards,

P.S. While I believe a lot of stuff Mercola says, I too find that e-mail address thing VERY intrusive and annoying!

Hi Celia,

Thank you for such in depth reply. I agree with all you said but I want to come back to the coconut oil and butter as the healthiest fats there are. The truth is coming out but slowly. Unfortunately, the junk food companies have lots of money and are very persuasive in their advertisement of their evil products and great majority of people do believe what they see on TV. So far I did not see any ads for real butter, did you? Producers of real butter are usually small farmers who do not have money to spare on ads. Only people who got burned believing the big business or those who really want to be healthy are coming to the realization that we were being misled. But those are minority. Still, I hope, I believe that more people will go on internet where they can learn the truth.

Thank goodness for internet!

Barbara

PS. I also believe that Mary Enig spoke the real truth in her book. She studied fats for more than 30 years, she did learn the truth.
