Guest guest
Colorado firm recalls 15,000 lbs. of sausage: USDAFri Jan 5, 2007 6:50 PM ETWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Colorado-based Gold Star Sausage Co., Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 15,514 pounds of sausage products that federal officials fear could cause listeriosis, a potentially fatal disease, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Friday. The meat, some of which was produced on December 9th, may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can bring about high fever, headaches, neck stiffness and nausea, USDA said.So far there have been no reported illnesses associated with the sausage products being recalled, USDA said. The meat was sold in retail and institutional establishments in an 18-state area.Healthy individuals are not usually susceptible to the illness, but it can cause infections to infants, the elderly, or people with HIV or cancer. It can also cause miscarriages. Each package bears the establishment number "EST. 1106" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The sausage products were distributed to retail and institutional establishments in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah, the agency said.USDA said the problem was discovered through microbiological testing completed by a non-government laboratory.http://today. reuters.com/ news/articlenews .aspx?type= domesticNews & storyID=2007- 01-05T235025Z_ 01_N05304029_ RTRUKOC_0_ US-USDA-RECALL- SAUSAGE.xml & WTmodLoc= USNewsHome_ C2_domesticNews- 7Ellen LaFleche-Christian Lilac Hill Homestead / Vermont http://tinyurl.com/lpfaf Do You ? Guest guest
I think so too! I recently read somewhere that one should have a "100 mile diet." That is to say, everything you consume should come from no farther than 100 miles away from you. I love that idea! But we're spoiled here in CA...I was really shocked to find all the organic meat, dairy and veggies that I can get that come from within 100 miles, or not too much further. Even some of the restaurants in Sacramento serve grass fed beef, organic veggies, bison (which I can't bring myself to try), etc. But a lot of our organic, quality local foods come from the bay area, where there is MUCH more of a demand. And even the CSA's here fill up fast, from what I read. Of course, all this is NOT inexpensive, so I imagine we'll make slow, small changes. Cyndi In a message dated 1/8/2007 9:34:40 A.M. Guest guest
We have more of a problem eating locally here in Vermont as far as veggies & fruits during the winter. There are times when I really want an apple in March or even an orange which we are NOT going to find within 100 miles :)Ellen LaFleche-Christian Lilac Hill Homestead / Vermont http://tinyurl.com/lpfaf Do You ? Guest guest
I love the localvore idea, too- but yeah, we are awfully spoiled in Sacramento!!! (maybe 200 miles is a little better- it seems like most of the vendors at the farmer's market come from the coast- watsonville/salinas area. -- Kairi Clark " In the time of your life, live-so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile in the infinite delight and mystery of it.
