I have a friend that has the WORST problems with swollen feet and anckles. Sometimes it's so bad he cant get his shoes on. Is there any thing he can try, like some kind of a soak or rub or something. The other day, he showed me where a water blister thingy had developed, i thnik he must be retaining a lot of water. brigitte

My 82 yr old mother has this same malady,

and it can be associated with heart disease and poor circulation, among

other

things. Anyone know if diabetes can cause this as an initial

symptom? My mother doesn't have heart disease or poor circulation,

according to her docs.

Oh, Brigitte...I would be concerned! As a former cardio-vascular tech, I can tell you that edema like that is an indication of serious illness and he needs to see a doctor right away. 1) The symptoms need to be treated for his comfort and safety. 2) The cause of his swelling needs to be discovered and addressed. He may have congestive heart failure due to a bunch of different problems ranging from silent heart attack or stroke to cancer or diabetes. If it's determined that the cause is not life threatening, he can at least have the symptoms treated and know that he's not in danger.

Don't wait! Please encourage him to address this as soon as possible. Ignoring a possibly serious health problem will not make it go away...it will likely get worse and could eventually cost him his life!

Thanks all for your reply! He has been to the Dr. and his heart is fine. He is on medication for high blood pressure that has a diuretic in it. The dr gave him some pills for the swollen feet a while back, but nothing seems to help. He said he's had this all of his life. I was just wondering if someone had tried something that helped. Glad to hear that he is under doctors care and it's not too serious. Thanks for letting us know, Brigitte!

Hello, guys! Our server at work caught the Trojan Horse that was released at midnight, so most of the replies I sent to the group did not go through. (I am also not receiving all of the messages either so I am going to the website to try to catch anything I may have missed.) I will try to resend my posts tonight when I get home.

Just didn't want anyone to think I was selectively answering e-mail that was addressed to me and ignoring others!

Sincerely,

Celia

I did have problems with swollen ankles in hot weather prior to being DXed

w/diabetes. I only got it in hot weather, when I was sitting at a desk

working all day & not much exercise. I don't know for certain that it was a

symptom of the diabetes, but I haven't had any more problems since I got my

blood sugar under control.

Kate, it was probably a combination of factors...poor circulation from diabetes, inactivity (which contributes to the lack of circulation) *and* the hot weather. You have quite accurately noted that when it's cooler and you are active (not sitting behind a desk all day), edema is not an issue!

Welcome to the list. <smiles>
