Guest guest
Tony, Renee offered to make some cuttings for me, or even to bottle some OS for me. It depends on how fresh the cuttings will be. If they are cut and sent Overnight, and I have my kettle ready, would that be fresh enough? I'm running slow, and won't be able to get to where oleander readily grows for longer than I expected. Guest guest
The cuttings can be a few weeks old and they will still be ok. Just make sure they are dried slightly in the open so that you don't get any mold forming on the damp leaves. Some people dry the leaves completely before they make the extract. Just be aware that the dried leaves will make a more concentrated extract if you use the same quantity by weight for a certain volume of water. The wet leaves are much heavier than the dry ones. Guest guest
Marc, Does the more concentrated extract from dried leaves pose a problem? Should we lessen the leaves to be boiled, or lessen the dosage? Thanks. Melly
Guest guest
Melly, If you let the leaves dry for a few days or so, it will not be a problem. If you let them dry completely, you will have a much higher quantity of leaves per liter of water when you take the recommended weight of 100gm per liter. However, if you filter your extract properly, this again will not be a problem. You may then find that you will require a slightly lower dosage to get the required results but very sensitive people may have to start with a quarter teaspoonful or less. When I make the extract, I adjust the concentration to a specific density of 1.01 but most people cannot do that. The best bet is not to let the leaves get too dry and use the cuttings within 2 or 3 days of harvesting them. Just remember that the side effects that people get from the extract are mostly due to the remains in the extract that are not filtered out properly. Many people take up to 10 teaspoons per day without any problem. I have had one person accidentally taking half a bottle (50 teaspoons) at one time. She had heart palpitations for a day or so, but she was discharged from hospital after 24 hours with no permanent damage of any kind. The toxic glycosides of the oleander plant are not soluble in water and they get filtered out if you do that part properly. The actual concentration of the extract then becomes less important from a safety point of view. Guest guest
Hi Marc, Finally received my OPC today. I had to go retrieve it at the substation Post Office...it was just sitting there for 5 days for some strange reason. I was given a notice by the letter carrier in my mailbox on May 30th that I had a registered package and it needed my signature and that they would attempt again, however they never did. Long story short I have it at last! We'll see how goes. Beautiful packaging by the way. Sooooo you said 2 a day for my pooch and 4 a day for me right? Sorry it has been a while and many emails since you gave me the dosage. Thank you~ Tammatha - Marc oleander soup Wednesday, June 04, 2008 1:33 AM Re: Re: How fresh do the cutting need to be Melly, If you let the leaves dry for a few days or so, it will not be a problem.
