Anyone looking for a quiet retreat this Summer?

I would jump on this, but it is volunteer and I need paid work.

Also I've volunteered for a week to rebuild another lookout in August.

If you are interested write and I'll send you the contact info.

Hope the library has that book to checkout.

PS If there are fires like we had last year, this could be all but

quiet.

Hello Everyone,

Bill Blount, the Salmon-Challis National Forest, South Zone FMO, sends the

following:

" The Salmon-Challis National Forest will be staffing the Roughneck

Lookout this summer and needs a volunteer. Roughneck is on the Middle

Fork Ranger District and was built in 1933 by CCC work crews. It was

occupied seasonally by fire lookouts until 2001, and has been inactive

ever since. Fire management would like to reduce detection flights in

this part of the forest and staffing Roughneck would reduce the need.

The lookout does not have road access and a 4 mile hike is required to

reach the site. The forest would like to staff the lookout starting

July

5th and ending about September 5th. Individuals with carpentry and

building maintenance skills are desired since the site has lacked

annual

maintenance since 2001.

The lookout is located in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness,

21 miles northwest of Stanley, Idaho. Like Bill says, its a four mile

hike

into the lookout, so it is fairly isolated. Stanley is about an hour's

drive from the trail head. You can get a feeling for the job and the

location by reading " Mountains of Memory: A Fire Lookout's Life in the

River of No Return Wilderness " by Don Scheese, who worked at the lookout

years ago.

So, if you would like to work on a wilderness lookout, or would like more

information, call Crystal.

Please pass this message along to anyone who you think might be interested

in the position.

Thanks for your help,

John Rose
