Many major U.S. companies have been developing products that substitute stevia for artificial sweeteners like aspartame, but the FDA currently bans any food product from containing the natural sweetener. The FDA claims that data and information necessary to support the safe use of stevia has been lacking. But on the FDA's own website, a GRAS petition submitted to the FDA in 1995 cited over 900 Stevia studies, none of which indicated any safety concerns regarding human health. http://healthy.net/scr/news.asp?id=9395 ____________ OSU LINUS PAULING INSTITUTE EXPERT: VITAMIN E TRIALS " FATALLY FLAWED " Generations of studies on vitamin E may be largely meaningless, scientists say, because new research has demonstrated that the levels of this micronutrient necessary to reduce oxidative stress are far higher than those that have been commonly used in clinical trials. In a new study and commentary researchers concluded that the levels of vitamin E necessary to reduce oxidative stress are about 1,600 to 3,200 I.U. daily, or four to eight times higher than those used in almost all past clinical trials. http://healthy.net/scr/news.asp?id=9404 ____________ CPR: NEW TECHNIQUE COULD SAVE MANY MORE LIVES A new method of CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), which concentrates on the belly area instead of the chest, is supposed to be more effective. Instead of two breaths for every 30 chest compressions, the new procedure provides a breath for every abdominal compression because pushing on the abdomen depresses the diaphragm toward the head, expelling air from the lungs. The new technique produces 25 per cent more blood flow through the heart muscle, and reduces the chances of damage to the rub cage. http://healthy.net/scr/news.asp?id=9387 ____________ MORE HEALTH NEWS....
