Hi Jerry,

Just wondering if you can help me make the BIG decision here on a serious problem I have with my 9yo son. He has decay in 2 adult molars both on the bottom 1 on L 1 on R side. Dentist advised to pull or do root canal. At first I thought she was referring to 1 adult tooth and 1 baby tooth on the same side so I decided to just get it pulled since he still will get his 12y molar and wisdom teeth. When I took him for consult at Oral Surgeon he pretty much refused to pull and found it hard to believe we were even there in his office. He said -"this is a no brainer - no way can you pull both of these teeth." So that only leaves RC.

I am currently reading the book by Jon Barron see link.. which advises to not have RC and if you do, to have them removed. Do you agree with this?

Thanks

New England Moves Toward Zero Mercury

A pact signed by all New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers to eliminate mercury products may cause the region to lead the way in zeroing out mercury fillings.

We all know what a horrid effect mercury fillings have on the environment -- to say nothing as on the children of this nation and world!

Dental mercury accounts for half of the mercury in wastewater,; mercury from cremated teeth is an environmental menace -- and listen to the latest, from Michael Bender -- 55% of all mercury carried in products (e.g., thermostats, cars, etc.) is in our mouths. We are car-rying over 1000 TONS of mercury, more than all mercury stored in all products combined. –Charlie Brown, Coalition for Mercury Free Dentistry

if I may Id like to give my opinion.

Im not a dentist, but Ive had so much dental work done in my life and my teeth were so bad from early childhood that I am an expert from the patients point of view.

first of all before I subjected anyone to a root canal Id get a second opinion.

Ive had teeth filled and refilled for many years before they got to the root canal stage. I think a good dentist can manage to save the tooth without the root canal for quite a while. I would try to to this before I agreed to a root canal.

the root canal takes out the nerve and for all intents and purposes kills the tooth and then the tooth dries out and becomes brittle and is more prone to breaking.

I just yesterday had to have the last vestages of a tooth extracted that had had a root canal. all that was left of the tooth was below the gum line and the dentist had to cut my gums down the side to get to the root and even then the root crumbled into little pieces trying to remove it.

now I did have a root canal and a crown on a tooth when I was about 14, and that tooth did last me about another 30 years. If the tooth is so far gone that it really has to have a root canal then I would go ahead with the root canal for now, rather than pulling. because he is so young. It is a fact that once you pull out a tooth the other teeth next to it can move. this can be a good thing if there isnt enough room in the mouth anyway and teeth are crooked because of overcrowding, but it can be a bad thing if they are not because not having the support of the teeth next to them the ones left can get loose.

I say this only because he is young. if it was someone that was 50 asking the same question Id say pull it, because once the root canal is done it does weaken the tooth, and eventually the tooth will have to be pulled anyway.

the older the person is, and the worse the shape of the tooth at the time of the root canal, the sooner the tooth is going to need pulling anyway.

one other thing to consider of course is cost. root canals and crowns cost 10 times what pulling one costs.

also remember to tell your dentist not to use amalgam fillings. they leach poison into the system. better to go with the acrylics.

Ash,

You have several problems - on which I cannot really offer definitive advice without seeing the situation first hand. Dr. George Meinig, author of The Root Canal Cover-Up EXPOSED (I wrote the Forward to this book), and I agree that root canal therapy is indicated in some cases, and I feel it is in your son's case. Even more importantly, WHY did he get so much decay? He needs a preventive approach. You should really read our newsletter. My son is 50 yrs. old, and he has no fillings - and his gums are in great shape. Do you want a referral to an- - - Reply with your po box or street address to get a freecopy of The Holistic Dental Digest PLUS.jmittelman What dentists aren't likely to learn in dental school holistic DDS?
