Peroxide Tooth Whitener Safety Questioned

Tooth whiteners, used either at a dentists' office, or as nonprescription kits often use carbamide peroxide as the tooth bleaching-whitening agent. 1/3 of carbamide peroxide is made up of hydrogen peroxide, a highly unstable, oxidizing agent. Some can-cer specialists believe the use of these kits may partly explain the jump in the number of cancer of the mouth cases in younger people. Tooth whiteners have become very popular recently. Oral cancer usually was found in older people with a history of drinking and smoking. A researcher at Georgetown U.Hosp., B.Davidson, MD, chairman of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, presented 2 cases of 2 young men in their 20s who developed advanced tongue cancer dccades before it usu-ally develops, after repeatedly using tooth whiteners. The report was presented at the 6th International Conf. on Head and Neck Cancer.

Research also shows that chemicals destroy the integrity of the tooth enamel. The whitening effect may last for a while, but the resulting porosity in the enamel can attract discoloration, Then the need appears for yet more and more bleaching and more damage to the teeth.
