As I write this note to you, the death toll in Asia continues to mount, and I find it hard to think about all of the pressing issues we have here at home. Our thoughts are with all of the survivors, and with those in mourning. Bush essentially has the opportunity to radically change the face of the court, and those of us who are concerned about the fate of Roe v. Wade need to pay close attention. The disease is ravaging the African continent and leaving a devastating legacy for survivors. Everyday, some 6,500 people die from AIDS in Africa, leaving behind a generation of orphans. For 2005, Congress has allocated $2.7 billion for the fight against global AIDS, or just 0.1% of the total U.S. budget. To put this in perspective, U.S. spending on AIDS next year will equal just 5% of annual U.S. spending on national defense. America can and should do more to fight global AIDS! That's why we need a minute of your time. Care2 is working with non-profits to urge the U.S. to commit 1% of the federal budget to fight this devastating disease.
