Researchers from the Institute of Public Health noted that, according to recent data, isoflavones from soy might have favorable effects on cardiovascular risk factors, so they decided to see if the isoflavones from red clover would produce a benefit. A double blind trial was initiated in which 177 women received 43.5 mg per day of red clover-derived isoflavones or a placebo. While there were no major differences in cholesterol or blood pressure in the subjects, there was a significant change in lowering triglyceride levels and boosting the effectiveness of apolipoprotein E (apoE) among perimenopausal women. Triglycerides are natural fats and oils in the body, but high levels of them are linked to heart disease. ApoE is a lipoprotein (a protein connected to a fat). Lipoproteins are responsible for carrying cholesterol and other fats through the bloodstream. ApoE is a major component of specific lipoproteins called very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL). A major function of VLDL is to remove excess cholesterol from the blood and carry it to the liver for processing, helping the body maintain normal cholesterol levels.
