An analysis of

several clinical trials shows that a standardized saw palmetto extract

can be successful in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH

typically reduces urinary flow and increases nighttime urination in men.

Researchers looked at the results of 14 randomized clinical trials and

three open-label trials, involving 4,280 patients. The trials were of

different size (22-1,100 patients) and different duration (21-720

days). Peak urinary flow rate and nocturnal urination were the two

common endpoints.

While analyzing the studies, researchers noted that standardized saw

palmetto was associated with a reduction in International Prostate

Symptom Score (IPSS) results. Patients saw an increase in peak urinary

flow rate and a reduction in the number of nighttime trips to the

bathroom.

Researchers concluded that standardized saw palmetto showed “a

significant improvement in peak flow rate and reduction in nocturia

above placebo, and a five-point reduction in the IPSS,” in men with BPH.
