My son complaints of depression and no drive to live.

Is this depression or a-motivation type of residual

symptom or negative symptom of schiz.? He had

responded well to 23 capsules daily of Mega3 each

consisting of 180mg EPA and 120mg of DHA. But relapsed

due to stress of night travel 1 to 4AM and skipping

one dose.

Complaints and observations:

Depression, no drive to live; frequent sore throat and

runny nose.

Esnophils above normal range, but basophils are very

very low.

Possible explanations of these:

1. Wheat and/or milk allergy.

2. High histamine status confirmed by questionnaire

for this, but note that the basophil count is very

very low.

3. Hypothyroidism, but note that TSH, T3 and T4 are

normal;

4. Stressed adrenals confirmed by questionnaire;

5. Low endorphins;

6. Pyroluria;

7. Low dopamine;

8. Low tryptophan?

Treatments planned:

1. If wheat/milk allergy is suspected by you, then I

can ask my son to give them up or severely reduce them

(he is addicted to them).

2. Would you suspect high histamine status in spite of

very very low basophil count?

Or, would you rather suspect very low histamine status

and treat for the low status?

3. I will run a home test of taking body temperature

for thyroid function.

Also I will get free TSH, T3, T4 done.

4. For stressed adrenals, I will do the home test of

adrenal function.

5. For possibly low endorphins, I will start

L-Phenylalanine.

6. For possible pyroluria, I will continue to give him

B6 and Zinc.

7. For possibly low dopamine, I will give him tyrosine

together with other supplements..

8. For possibly low serotonin, I will give him

tryptophan together with juice, B3 and Inositol.

I want him out of his “depression” fast. So, I wish to

go all out. Once I get him back on track, I can start

cutting down.

I wait for your learned comments please. Thanks in

anticipation.

Ratan.

Hi Ratan,

Oh, OK, that explains it. Here is the good old USA, it is illegal to sell

tryptophan in health food stores. Lucky you!

Much love,

Pamela

Hi Pamela,

It can still be obtained from a few veterinarians for a reasonable

price. If you have a need for trytophan, it may be worth your while

to investigate.

However we obtain Tryptophan, we must first have some advice from a

respected, science-based, alternative-med professional, regarding safe use,

dosages, sources, etc.

I have some more information on this, from a comment someone made on my site:

I read your article and agree with all but one part.

The FDA lifted their ban in FEb. 2001 with many restrictions in place.

We have been selling to Holistic Healthcare practitioneers and now

health food stores...the purest L Tryptophan available in the world.

It is USP Pharmaceutical Grade and is 99.6% pure as shown by our C of

A's. The FDA came into our plant a few months ago, took a barrel and

our literature and came back a few days later congratulating us on

our purity, integrity and truth in advertising.

Of course, the FDA doesn't put it in writing. The agent actually

purchased a couple of bottles for himself.

Our imported product now clears customs in 3 days.

We are in 500 Health Food stores and that number is growing daily.

Regarding depression, you do not mention your son's

age. High school in particular is very depressing and

many or most high schoolers are chronically unhappy

because of the extreme dysfunction in our governmental

systems and the unrealistic pressures placed on them.

It is particularly difficult for many boys due to

their role and their hormonal changes. Many or most

will go through a stage anywhere from approximately

15-17 when their " brains leak out " for a period of

months or years. During this time they will appear

insane to their parents but normal to other adults,

especially adults who have never had children. If they

can survive this trial, the brains grow back and they

become normal again.

Because our culture discourages respect for parents,

parents are often helpless to influence or protect

their teenage sons. The best course of action is to

discourage their taking a job and provide economic

help in the form of an allowance. School work and

sleep are full time jobs at this age--sleep is vital.

It might seem like a good learning experience to have

a job, but this often is the straw that breaks the

camel's back in terms of stress. Many high schoolers

get up very early for school and have heavy study

loads. There is little extra time. Sports can be

overly demanding as well. Less is more--sleep is very

important for a growing teen. Boys have additional

pressures that girls do not have in terms of keeping

up their image and paying for girls whereas often a

girl will be paid for if she has no money.

Also, if you can get your child out of the public

school and out of the city this can help. A child

with learning problems can be helped with a tutor. Try

to do everything possible to scrape together the money

needed to give support to a struggling student. He

will get little real help at school if he is

struggling. The stresses are often truly deadly and

can lead to suicide--don't expect your son to tough it

on his own.

Emotions are powerful messages about how we feel and

should be honored. Who would not feel depressed

living in the United States today? Obviously, a more

sensitive and aware person will be more alarmed and

depressed.

Obviously, we should do everything possible to build

our physical health and reduce stress. Sometimes, if

at all possible, it may be a very good idea to LEAVE

THE COUNTRY.

My psychiatric prescription in a nutshell. (And it was

free!)
