Will take bone density in the near future to see ,if improvement can be seen M 62 13 months reinhard.knoedler 4 osteopenia I currently take 35 mg. once a week. I have not had any side effects. Bone density scans show that I am still in the osteopenia stage after 4 years of fosamax. I may need to increase dosage to 70 mg. once a week if my next scan doesn't show improvement. F 52 4 years 4 M 60 4 months 4 steroid induced osteoporosis increased sensitivity to spicy or acidic foods. Bone remineralized in hip to near normal level for my age. Held progress of osteoporosis in spine. M 56 2 years 3 osteoporosis have been taking about 4 weeks, have severe acid reflux reaction and nausea, heartburn soon passed. Will have another bone density test June 2, depending on this, I may decided to quit taking fosamax..Also have arthritis and fosamax has made this seem much worse.. I am trying to decide what to do. Also have dark stools, but the nurse asked me to try a few more weeks. Iam uncertain at this point I am 74 female 74 4 days buddyr77 3 Small loss of bone Noticed right away my Sciatic pain increased measureably to the point I wanted to cry! I kept taking other pain killers and I also had 3 shots in my back for pain! Although the shots helped pain did not completely go away. I ran out of it for a few days once and noticed my pain lessened quite a lot! Then I started taking the once a week pill. The pain came back with a vengence! I could hardly move at night to the point I didn't want to get out of bed to go to the bathroom because I knew when I got back into bed I would be in excruciating pain! Not that laying in bed helped the pain. Trying to go back to sleep with the pain was not easy. Now my doctor is retiring and I ran out of the pills and to be honest I DON'T want to take them again! For the first time in a long while I can go to and get out of bed without severe pain! I wouldn't recommend it if you have a sciatic nerve problem! I feel SO MUCH better now and I can move around with little pain, although the sciatic pain is by no means gone it SURE is livable now! Oh yes, I too also have a problem with my ankles cracking and feeling stiff in both my feet and hands. F 59 3 years ghalsey 3 Osteopenia Severe and abrupt leg cramps, stiffness, hip pain My bone density has increased rapidly but I'm not sure I will continue taking it for too long. I may rest for a period of time and re-start after. Not sure. F 45 4 months 3 osteoporois stiffness F 73 5 years 2 osteopenia Had only taken for two weeks (once a week tab) and had chronic sore throat. Stomach pain was constant and also joint pain that I had never had before. ???Is it worth it. Do the side effects subside after taking for a while, because I don't know if I want to continue. F 51 2 bone density problems After taking it for 3 months my fingers, middle finger on each hand started hurting. I stopped for 2 weeks and it went away. I had never had any pain in my hands or other joints other than my hip when I drive. Now after taking it for 3 more months the joints in my thumbs, all of them are hurting. I have again stopped for a week and they are getting better. I don't know if the fosamax has helped with the bone density problem; however, if I cannot find studies that address the problem, I will take my chances with my bones as I had no pain before.I am currently on no other medication-- and according to the study that recently came out they do not know if the drug actually prevents fractures---why would it be prescribed if that is true? M 61 7 months 2 osteoporosis leg pain, hip pain, general bad feeling F 58 6 months 2 osteoporosis difficulty walking, bad joint pains, swelling in hand/arm and also in legs F 71 3 months 1 Osteoporosis I was not connecting the joint, muscle pain, especially in my wrists, feet, and back until recently. My rheumatologist prescribed double doses of Celebrex, to no avail. Recently, I experienced problems swallowing, throat pain and heartburn and began to connect it to the possibility that it may be Fosamax. I will discontinue immediately. I wonder how long it will take to get this out of my system! My last bone density test went from Osteoporosis to Osteopenia. Am not sure it's worth the side effects. F 63 3 years 1 Preventive Severe pain in my ankles and wrist keeps me up at night and effects my life style. Pain relievers such as Advil do not touch the pain and HydroCodone has its own problems and side effects. I quite taking Fosamx for a month and was getting better. I tried it after a month (weekly dose of 70MG) and by bedtime my pain was back. I will continue to take calcium but I am done with Fosamax. Someone needs to get this imformation out to the public, it took me a long time before I found this site. The Fosamax manufacturer probably knows about these problems but doesn't want the information out. F 57 3 months 1 osteoporosis preventative I started taking Fosamax 70mg once weekly in Nov 2002. After about a month I began to have pain and weakness in my fingers, hands and wrists, particularly early morning and after periods of inactivity. My chosen day to take Fosamax was Sunday, initially the problem was on the Sunday, the more I took the further into each week the problem lasted until it was continuous and my hands became very weak. The problem presented itself like fluid around my joints, shaking my hands and holding my arms above my head helped, I was convinced that I had some dibilitating disease. I stopped taking the drug after about four months and immediately the problem stopped worsening.I had many tests, blood and nerve conduction tests included. The results were all negative. My consultant asked me to keep a food diary and from this I am convinced that the problem is linked to the amount of fruit, fruit drinks wine etc that I consume, particularly tomatoes and citrus fruits. I have contacted the manufacturers to ask them to conduct an investigation into a link with Fosamax and Fruit acids but they are not interested. I still have the problem but I can now control it by reducing the amount of fruit and fruit acids in my diet.No one can tell me how long this drug will be in my system and therefore how long I will have to suffer this unrecognised side effect of Fosamax. F 58 4 months Cgeoffmal 1 Osteopenia My GYN recommended it for osteopenia. A few days after the first once-per-week dosage I began having joint pains in my thumbs which shortly took over my whole hand, now my whole body. I feel like I have the flu all the time or full body arthritis. I had none of these symptoms before and have only been taking Fosamax for one month. I saw my PCP who did blood work to check for arthritis and he recommended that I stop taking the Fosamax after checking the side effects. It may work for some people, but it has made me feel miserable and I am not taking it any more. I feel worse than a 90-year-old woman and move about like one. Anyone taking it should be VERY cautious about any changes in pain and/or side effects they experience and report them to their physician. F 50 30 days 1 osteoporosis severe abdominal pain, severe back pain, bloating, muscle spasms felt as though hit by a baseball bat. Breathing very difficult. Mild sore throat, some trouble swallowing. Have only taken the once (prescribed the 1 day a week pill 70mg) Side effects of drug too difficult to manage. F 56 1 days yvonnefitzgerald 1 Osteopenia, Osteoporosis I have been having difficulty getting up from a sitting position and also getting out of cars. Both of my legs hurt but the right one is really bad. My upper legs seem very weak. All of this started approximately Dec. 2003 and last week an orthopedic surgeon suggested I stop taking Fosamax to see if it makes any difference. I started taking it in Nov. 2003 so it does seem that it might be the cause of all of my pain. I am wondering how long it takes to get the stuff out of my system. It sure would be nice to go back to how I felt before I started taking it. I feel like I've aged 100 years in 9 months.
