Guest guest
Oats can help prevent blood cell stickiness http://www.swansonvitamins.com/include/newsletter/emailRU_082704/RUa1_082704.html Over the years the foods we eat, the liquids we drink and the exercise we don’t get, can all help clog our arteries. Now scientists have demonstrated that oats can help keep those arteries open. When blood cells stick to artery walls and cause inflammation, plaque deposits build up and narrow the passageways through which blood flows. But a recent study shows that antioxidants in oats, known as avenanthramides, can suppress the plaque, and in turn reduce the gradual constriction of vessels that leads to hardening of the arteries. Nutritionist Mohsen Meydani and fellow scientists at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston conducted the study. The research was funded by the Agricultural Research Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To test the compound’s anti-degenerative activity within arterial walls, Meydani and his team purified avenanthramides from oats and exposed them to human arterial wall cells for 24 hours. They then observed the mixture under incubation. Researchers found that the ability of blood cells to stick to arterial wall cells was significantly reduced. “Adding oat products as part of an overall healthy diet and cutting down on high-fat, high-cholesterol foods are important to gaining these benefits,” Meydani said. His team filed a patent on the function of avenanthramides present in oats, based on their anti-inflammatory and antiatherogenic effects. Guest guest
I have had success is getting my cholesterol down. I take red rice yeast, but I also put about 1/2 cup of oats on my regular cereal three to four times a week. I really think this has helped tremendously. Cholesterol hasn't been shown to be linked to heart disease; equal numbers of people with normal cholesterol get heart disease.
