Omega-3s may reduce prostate

cancer risk

“EPA and DHA

intakes may reduce the risk of total and advanced prostate cancer,”

according to a study undertaken by researchers at the Nutritional

Epidemiology Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics,

National Cancer Institute.

The team evaluated the association between dietary intake of EPA

(eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and prostate

cancer risk in a cohort of 47,866 men between 40 and 75 years of age

who were free from prostate cancer at the beginning of the study.

After 14 years of follow-up, 2,965 subjects developed prostate cancer.

Of those 2,965 subjects, 448 developed advanced prostate cancer.

Researchers found that men with the highest intake of EPA and DHA had

an 11% reduced risk of developing prostate cancer and a 26% reduced

risk of developing advanced prostate cancer.
