Mangosteen and Cancer pub. By sound concepts.

MANGOSTEEN and CANCER

J. Frederic Templeman, MD: Cancer is a blanket term covering a

variety of disorders with the common element of abnormal,

uncontrolled cell growth that will not stop on its own. Under

normal conditions, cell growth is strictly controlled with cell

birth equaling cell death so that the total number of cells in the

body remains relatively constant. At times, abnormal growth that is

not cancerous can occur. We still call the abnormal tissue

a " tumor " but it is benign and not malignant (cancerous). In this

pamphlet, I will be dealing only with cancer.

The mechanism which stimulates cells to divide and multiply (when

repair or replacement work is needed in the body) and then turns

them off afterwards is under the control of genes contained in the

chromosomes of the nucleus. These genes, which are composed of DNA,

can be thought of as the policemen of cell society. The nucleus of

the cell would be the control center of all regulatory activity.

In the nucleus, the DNA, like the hard drive of a computer, contains

all the programming for the body. When it is damaged by free

radicals, for example, it can become corrupted or scarred. This

damage is called mutation and it is the critical event that leads to

cancer. A mutation can be seen as the failure of a gene to perform

its duty. (Watch for the change here). Using the policeman

comparison again, mutation becomes possible only if the policeman

(gene) is corrupted by criminal elements and becomes a criminal

himself or if he is asleep on the job and does nothing while

damaging changes occur around him.

Continuing the analogy, disease, viruses, environmental pollutants,

dangerous foods etc. can be seen as criminal elements whose purpose

is to disrupt the society of cells in our body and then profit from

the chaos and damage that results. These criminal elements have

agents working for them called free radicals. Free radicals charge

around the body like madmen armed with automatic weapons which they

fire all around them damaging healthy cells. They then steal

electrons left unprotected by their attack. Their primary target is

the DNA in the nucleus, the command center of the cell where they

can inflict the greatest damage.

A prominent free radical researcher Dr. Bruce Ames estimates that

the DNA material in every one of the trillions of cells in our body

receives about ten thousand hits from free radicals everyday! To

prevent a breach of the body's defenses in the face of an attack of

such magnitude requires the concerted efforts of all the agents of

the immune system, which can be seen as the armed forces of the

body, along with the collaboration of the policemen or the gene

regulatory mechanism.

When, despite the body's best efforts, a breach of our defenses

occurs, a tumor forms. Like a city captured by enemy forces, the

tumor becomes a stronghold that has multiple defense mechanisms with

which it resists the continued attacks of the immune system. Within

the stronghold, tumor viruses and deranged cells proliferate and are

sent out like secret agents to corrupt (infect) healthy cells

elsewhere. The cells of the tumor itself grow without the

restrictions that govern normal cells and, almost immediately,

become the fastest growing tissue in the body. As they grow

rapidly, they steal food and energy needed by healthy cells. For

this reason, cancer patients may appear starved and wasted (a

medical term called cachexia). Tumors cause pain by becoming large

enough to press on nerves or other pain sensitive structures. They

can block ducts or intestines causing severe bodily dysfunction.

They often completely take over whole organs, i.e. the liver or

lungs, crowding out functioning cells and leading to organ death.

Many cancers spread or metastasize to other areas of the body

(remember the " secret agent " tumor viruses?), invading organs far

from where they originally started. In contrast, most normal cells

are anchored in place. Because of this mobility, a breast cancer

cell can make its way to the brain, for example, and start another

tumor. When metastases (distant sites of cancer invasion) are

present, the enemy has already developed several strongholds

throughout the body. If the cancer is unchecked, death is the

inevitable outcome.

Standard cancer intervention centers on the surgical excision of

tumors and/or their destruction by radiation or chemotherapy.

Immuno-stimulative therapies, although rare, also exist.

Unfortunately, most of these interventions also damage normal

healthy tissue as well. For example, chemotherapy indiscriminately

destroys all rapidly-growing cells (sometimes by producing large

numbers of free radicals). Therefore, while it targets cancer, it

also destroys normal hair follicles, blood-producing bone marrow

cells, the cells which line the intestine and, most importantly, the

protective cells of the immune system which are essential to the

prevention of infection. The challenge of therapy is to destroy the

cancer before the chemotherapy or other treatment mortally weakens

the patient.

It is ironic to consider that the radiation and the free radical

attacks of chemotherapy that are used to destroy the tumors may

resemble the process that caused the cancer in the first place!

While not commonly recognized by most doctors, food supplements can

be valuable adjuncts o standard cancer therapy. No compelling

evidence has emerged to prove that they interfere with chemotherapy

although some researchers have examined this possibility.

Additionally, unlike medicines which do nothing to prevent cancer,

food supplements are extremely effective at regulating the cellular

dysfunction that leads to mutation and cancer. The expression, " An

ounce of medicine is worth a pound of cure " was never more

applicable!

Mangosteen's xanthones (phytoceuticals found only in this plant)

have proven ability to destroy cancerous cells, and in fact,

Garcinone E, an xanthone, was more effective than five commonly used

chemotherapy agents for stomach, lung and liver cancer (vincristine,

mitoxantrone, 5-flourouracil, cisplastin and methotrexate) in a

recent well-designed in vitro study.

In order to understand the several means by which mangosteen

phytoceuticals protect us from cancer, I miust return for a mment to

the most accepted theory of cancer development.

Step one The genetic material (DNA) of the cell is damaged by

free radicals from pollution, metabolic residues and infection or

disease and MUTATION occurs.

Step two The damaged cell divides and begins to disobey the

rules of normal cell replication. Cancer now exist.

Step three Carcinogens then promote the development and

progression of the tumor often leading to metastases.

Where do the mangosteen phytoceuticals intervene in this deadly

process? Well, the answer is that in addition to being anti-tumor

agents when cancer already exists, they prevent and arrest cancerous

change at every step.

It is quite impossible for us to avoid exposure to carcinogens and

the free radical assaults that follow, but the antioxidants and

other active phytoceuticals in the mangosteen can provide protection

from critical cell damage. They do this by regulating gene

expression and repairing free radical damage. In other words, they

protect against cancer by helping both the policemen (genes) and the

armed forces of the body (immune system) to become more efficient at

preventing mutation in the first place.

Additionally, the biologically active elements in the mangosteen

impede the promotion and the progression of cancer when DNA damage

does occur. Finally, they attack existing tumors.

A word of caution. I've described previously in " Mangosteen, the X-

factor " the differences between medicines and phytoceuticals.

Medicines are like sledgehammers compared to the rubber mallets of

the phytoceuticals. Do not stop any cancer treatment to replace it

with mangosteen. The phytoceuticals will do their work even in the

presence of other cancer therapies. Remember also that there is no

conclusive evidence that the use of phytoceuticalsimpairs the

efficacy of chemotherapy.

Finally, while it is exciting to realize what the mangosteen

phytoceuticals will do in the area of cancer treatment, it is far

more important to prevent the development of cancer in the first

place. Nothing does it better than mangosteen. Waiting until you

develop cancer in order to learn how to deal with it just isn't

smart. You may not fel the protective work it's doing in your body,

but as the years go by the results you'll experience will be

difficult to imagine. Unfortunately, many of your friends who chose

not to supplement will not be around to celebrate your good health.

So are you saying that mangosteen

cures cancer? You legally can’t

say that, simply because mangosteen is a fruit and

you are making medical claims. You are

directing people to your chat list, which is fine – but everybody don’t

get taken in by all the hype - be aware that this company is owned by Phillip Morris,

and they are the people who used to also be

into the noni juice.

The xango

product also has preservatives in it – potassium sorbate,

sodium benzoate, xanthan gum, and “natural flavor”

is usually made with alcohol as a solvent (“natural flavor”

covers such a wide range of ingredients, could also be

animal-based) - which all those

things considered, takes it off my list of edibles. I’m sure mangosteen is a very good antioxidant, but so is pomegranate juice

and way more inexpensive and tastes better too.

Here’s the

ingredients of that xango mangosteen juice: Reconstituted garcinia

mangostana juice from whole fruit, apple juice concentrate,

pear juice concentrate, grape juice concentrate, pear puree, blueberry juice

concentrate, raspberry juice concentrate, strawberry juice concentrate,

cranberry juice concentrate, cherry juice concentrate, citric acid, natural flavor,

pectin, xanthan gum, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate.

Mangosteen and Cancer

Hi gmduval,

I smell a scam. I don't think there is any proof, but please correct

me if I'm wrong.

To show how I arrived at my decision, let's shed some light on

Mangosteen's purported effect on cancer and more with this newspaper

article taken mainly from Dr. Ralph Moss' newsletter on the subject:

_______

Mangosteen, a traditional remedy with a familiar pitch

Body Electric

The Mangosteen fruit rind has been used for its therapeutic

properties for centuries. In South America, Mangosteen tea has been

used as a de-worming medicine and digestive aid. In the Caribbean, a

tea is used as a tonic for fatigue and depression, an extract from

the fruit has been used to control fever in the Philippines, and in

Asia, Mangosteen has long been used for eczema, skin disorders and

conditions.

Mangosteen rind contains powerful phytonutrient antioxidants called

xanthones. Research has found 23 known xanthones, polysaccharides and

other active chemicals, and marketers suggest that Mangosteen might

even be a treatment for cancer. The pitch soon got into the radar of

Dr. Ralph Moss, author of several books including Herbs against

Cancer, and Cancer Therapy: The Independent Consumer's Guide. Well-

known for his balanced views of cancer remedies, Dr. Moss was the

first to blow the whistle on the Sloan Kettering Cancer Clinic, where

he worked in the public relations department, for lying that their

research in the cancer clinic showed Laetrile had no effect on cancer

when in fact the opposite was tue. Certainly he is not biased against

natural remedies.

Says Dr. Moss in his May 14, 2004 newsletter (RalphMoss.com),

" Marketers of the drink have widely claimed Xango has exceptional

health-giving properties based on its very high antioxidant (ORAC)

score. " But Dr. Ronald Prior of the US Department of Agriculture

Research Service at Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts observes,

" a significant increase in antioxidants of 15 to 20 percent is

possible by increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables,

particularly those high in ORAC value. " However, says Moss, " ...one

can only meaningfully increase one's daily intake by 3,000 to 5,000

ORAC units, and taking in 25,000 ORAC units at one time would be no

more beneficial than taking in a fifth of that amount; the excess is

simply excreted by the kidneys. " According to Dr. J. Frederic

Templeman, a Georgia family practitioner who is widely quoted by

XanGo marketers, if you take these antioxidants " you aren't going to

probably have a heart attack as fast as someone who doesn't take

them " and consuming them could therefore constitute " literally the

difference between life and death. " , but says Moss, " Although I

myself have written a book on the subject of the benefit of

antioxidants (Antioxidants Against Cancer), I would say it is a

tremendous stretch to claim that antioxidants are predictably going

to save anyone's life. "

During an interview with Dr. Templeman on the subject of Mangosteen's

beneficial effect on cancer, the company interviewer and the doctor

agree with each other that a single test tube experiment can be seen

by the world as proof of the anticancer value of the juice. Dr.

Templeman refers to 44 scientific publications on this topic, but in

fact just four of these studies relate to cancer. By contrast, PubMed

lists over 2,300 articles on the topic of vitamin C and cancer, 125

of which refer to clinical trials. There are a similar number of

studies on vitamin E and cancer. There are 835 studies of melatonin

and cancer, and a truly impressive 16,000 on polysaccharides and

cancer, including 536 clinical trials and 277 randomized controlled

trials (RCTs). Four test-tube experiments hardly constitute

" mountains of evidence " referred to by Dr. Templeman. In fact, PubMed

does not contain a single clinical trial of Mangosteen in the

treatment of cancer or any other disease. To be quite clear, Moss

points out that laboratory studies on cell lines or even animals do

not qualify for the title 'clinical study' referred to by the

marketers. These require human subjects.

Moss continues, " In my opinion, what we have here is simply an

overpriced fruit drink. Fruit drinks are often healthful beverages.

But the only reason I can see that the promoters of Mangosteen can

get away with charging [whatever] is that they are playing on

patients' hopes and fears in a cynical way. Without the health

claims, open or implied, the product could only be sold for at most

$5 or $6 (which, for example, is the cost of antioxidant-rich

pomegranate juice). The Mangosteen phenomenon is a reprise of the

aloe vera, gingko biloba, and especially the noni juice story,

complete with exaggerated claims for the health benefits of an exotic

fruit. It should come as no surprise that both the President and the

Chief Financial Officer of Xango once worked for Morinda (now called

Tahitian Noni International). "

Ahhh.. I thought the marketing sounded familiar! And just as I had

found the flavoured Tahitian Noni Juice was much less potent than

pure Noni juice, powdered leaves or especially an extract offered by

other companies, while investigating for this article I found a

product that contains about 7 times Xango's key active ingredient

(beta mangostin) and 9 times the other xanthones per ounce.

Comparisons are here:

http://www.newvision.com/evplusmangosteen.asp

Does the competition know something Xango doesn't? Could be;

Essentials Plus also contains much higher b-vitamins and folate,

higher antioxidants and selenium, more phytonutrients, plus aloe

vera, a source of the well-studied polysaccharides mentioned above.

Not bad for a fruit drink.

It makes sense that if you want Mangosteen you'll be most interested

in the best potency plus aloe... sign up with New Vision

International and get Essentials Plus for wholesale price.

You reply to the group with this.

`Hey guys, I never said it cured cancer, the research shows what Dr.

Templeman is seeing to be true in his practice. Although, I have

been getting great success stories to my email from Cancer patients

so I guess they can let share with you why they use a mangosteen

extract. I bet I couldn't get them to not buy Xango no matter what I

said Noni had in it...LOL. For a portion of the research

www.pubmed.com (type in the word mangosteen) # 3,4,5,6,10,13,14,15

and I still can't figure out what 16 says...LOL I only have people

join my group to look at the rest of the research I found so that I

don't get carpal tunnel listing it all :o) Ralph moss is just a

human like the rest of us who have an opinion. He did not even find

all the research I did so I guess that dosen't say much for his PhD.

Most decide to try on fact and not someone elses opinion that didn't

even do adequate research or try it to prove it wrong. Notice also

he is promoting the products from his site...interesting. Noni juice

tastes awful and I have not heard of that working like I have

mangosteen. That is great if it did. But I am going with what worked

on a gentleman who had great success with prostate cancer last week.

To each his own :o). Happy researching, Shanda(your URL

Try typing in a more specific search, like mangosteen cancer in the

NLM search box here:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search & DB=pubmed

Just five in-vitro studies appear, four for human cancer cell lines

and one for rat cancer.

There weren't any in-vivo studies at all, not even in animals. Try a

search on mangosteen cancer vivo. Like Dr. Moss says, in-vitro lab

work is not a clinical study. Clinical studies use real people. Grasp

at straws if you like.

I'll word it another way for you... Once we get all those cancer

cells into the beaker in order to kill them with mangosteen juice,

why not just use salt instead? Or simply toss them in the garbage?

I'm not sold on it yet, but if a person wants to try this latest

juice because of slick advertising for the Xango brand, they might

like to know that a mangosteen juice that has NINE TIMES Xango's

potency, three times the antioxidants, plus minerals and aloe missing

from Xango. This being New Vision International's Essentials Plus.

Here again is the comparison: http://newvision.com

Aloe helps. Try a search on aloe cancer vivo. Six hits. One human

clinical study; there may be others. And we don't have to remove the

cancer cells from the body to kill them ;)

We also have other ways to do in-vivo work with tools at hand that

are much less expensive. For a better understanding of the electrical

properties of cancer cells and how to better deal with this disorder,

have a look here:
