the Mother in Apple Cider Vinegar

Marion I live in Australia and we can get the unpasteurised organic Apple Cider Vinegar here too and it definitely has the mother in it. It's a thickish substance and I believe you can save it and make your own cider vinegar. (Must search on the net about that) I wouldn't drink anything else for a remedy, at least with the Mother in it, I know it's the 'good' one. You don't have to drink the 'Mother' it's like a starter. Actually I knew an old lady years ago who had ordinary white vinegar and she showed me how she kept the 'Mother' in a bottle and she just kept adding water to that bottle to keep her vinegar going. I think she must have also added sugar or something to feed it, not sure. What does one feed vinegar with? It's a living (if you could call it living) thing. Has anyone ever had Kombucha tea? I used to have a couple of "Plants" and it is a similar thing I believe. They are a living mushroom type thing, though not a mushroom really. They had to have tea and sugar to keep them going. My great-aunt used to swear by it for decongesting her lungs. Jenny

Hi, I am a bit new here. I have been reading post, but have not posted yet. Just learning. I also use the braggs vinegar it does have the mother in it. I shake it and drink it too. Good for upset stomachs as well. I read were you stated They had to have tea and sugar to keep them going. My great-aunt used to swear by it for decongesting her lungs.

I was wondering about the tea, I have been having bronchial problems everysince I caught bronchitis this year. Now I am having allergies that are causing me asthma symtpoms. I have been totally healthy till this happend and have not been asthmatic. I have tried lots of things but am just stumped here. How does the tea work? Can I buy it somewhere that is good quality like a brand name or something to try?

Thank you,

Debra

Hi Debra!

The tea is made from what a lot of people call Kombucha mushroom. It's not really a mushroom. You can get it from most health food stores, but I'm not sure about in USA. You have to brew up a couple of pints of tea with about 6 teabags of good organic green or black tea. Here's what it says on the internet how to prepare it as I've lost my instructions.

"PREPARATION & DOSAGES Use glass or enameled pot and wooden or plastic spoon - no metal. Heat 3 quarts of water, at start of boiling add one cup light brown sugar, let boil 5 minutes. Turn off heat and add 5 bags of organic black tea, cover for 10 minutes, remove bags and let cool. Place Manchurian mushroom on top of liquid and cover with cheesecloth. Let ferment 7 days in cool (70-75 °F) dark place. Filter through fine cloth and store in refrigerator. Drink 4 oz (1/2 glass) in the morning on an empty stomach. If tea is too strong or fermented dilute with fresh tea.

You remove the Kombucha when you refrigerate the liquid and keep it in a small amount of the tea to keep it fresh in a separate jar. I don't think I kept it in the fridge though, only the freshly brewed part I was drinking. If the 'mushroom' is kept in the fridge it will take longer to ferment if I remember rightly. Anyway a health food shop would have explicit instructions.

Follow these instructions and you can't go wrong.. Jenny
