Lots of good info. Part two to follow. Jan Dr Dave <daaveland--23355012 Jan <Janslama-aaaa3387 Mon, 2 Aug 2004 00:16:47 -0400 Fish Oil and Cancer Revisted Part 1 Dear Jan, Fish Oil and Cancer, Part 1 Very shortly I will be releasing specific information about specific cancers, including Breast, Prostate Colon Lymphoma And Lung The following is a reprint of an email sent out over 2 months ago to a list that has now grown immensely since that time. May of you were not getting my emails at that time so in order to lay the ground work for the next series on Fish Oil and Cancer, I am resending it now. You will need it to understand much of what is to come. Doc Hi Doc, You have said in your emails that your Fish Oil helps prevent cancer and may help to treat people with cancer already. I want to believe you, but it seems that there are always people out there who want to take advantage of other people’s suffering. I get the sense that you’re not one of them but could your address the cancer issue more specifically so I can take it to my mom’s oncologist? Kim G Tallahassee, Fl. Dr Dave, Cancer runs in my family. While I definitely feel better on your Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil (better sleep less joint aches much more energy) will it help me to not get Cancer? Jarred Levan, Portland Oregon I actually have written a lot about Fish Oil and specific cancers such as Breast, Prostate, and Colon but I am going to keep this one a bit more generic and talk about cancer in general. In the case of Kim above, her Mom has Breast Cancer that is what is know as receptor positive. This means that the cancer cells express estrogen receptors on their surface, and the treatment takes that into account. Jarred on the other hand told me that there were lung, colon and lymphoma (lymph node) Cancers in his family. Frankly if I had to pick families, I’d pick Kim’s! Still fish Oil definitely has many many benefits for Kim’s mom as well as Kim herself (remember most cancers have at least some genetic component), and Jarred whose genetic cards are stacked against him. There are 3 ways or types of studies that Fish Oil has been evaluated in. 1) Molecular studies. We call these “Petri Dish†studies. A Petri dish is a nutrient rich plate that can support the life and growth of cell cultures. A cell culture is a clump of cells that are kept alive for study purposes. Some type of chemical or natural compound is dumped into the dish and the results are noted. Cancer has an amazing ability to stay alive in “Petri Dishesâ€. You see cancer cells don’t ever stop growing until their host (you and I!) dies usually as a result of the cancer! Somewhere out there is a lung cancer cell line that has been growing in a dish for over 70 years now, long after the woman it was taken from is dead and gone! 2) Animal studies. Here the cancer cells are usually injected or actually grafted (transplanted) into or onto the animal and various treatments are tried. Usually the animal has some genetic likeness to humans at least in the system that is being checked (lung, colon, brain etc). 3) Human Studies. NO WE DO NOT GIVE PEOPLE CANCER TO STUDY DRUGS! But people who already have cancer are often enrolled in “protocols†which are experimental to evaluate the possibility that a new drug or compound benefits the treatment of cancer. Another subset of human studies is the population based study. Example take an isolated population say Greenland Inuit’s. The geographic location and social isolation of this population makes them genetically more alike than many populations. This allows genetics to be factored in or out depending on what you are looking at. Studies of this particular population show a very low incidence of Breast, and Prostate Cancer, as well as heart disease. Why? Omega 3 Fatty Acids (fish oils!) of course. To anyone who does this sort of thing for a living I apologize for making it sound so simple. It is very complex and takes a lot of dedication. Without this kind of research which I know I personally could never do ( I’m a people person!) we would not have easy access to all of this great information! In tomorrow’s email I am going to go into the many ways that Fish Oil can help nearly every kind of CANCER! So stay tuned! Doc The FDA has not evaluated all of these statements. This email is for educational purposes only. Always consult your own personal doctor for medical advice and follow it even it contradicts what is said in this email.
