Guest guest Posted January 14, 2003 Report Share Posted January 14, 2003 My friend has been on thyroid meds for the last two years but for some reason (and I'm still waiting to hear from her on this) she now needs surgery. They told her that if she doesn't have the surgery then she will need a biopsy every 6 months and that there is a 30% chance that the cells from her thyroid have spread, in which case she's going to need to have it out. Guest guest Posted January 17, 2003 Report Share Posted January 17, 2003 Sandy, I took Levothyroxine for almost 10 years, with no appreciable good results that I saw, except my test scores always came out " normal " . For the last year I've been off of all medications, and have been drinking wheatgrass juice daily (2 to 12 ounces, depending on my mood and how much I'm willing to juice) to stabilize my thyroid. My scores are still " normal " , but I have never had the increase in energy that I have always hoped for. Until about 5 days ago. I started taking 2 drops of Lugol's solution in an 8 ounce glass of water, and from day 1 I've had so much energy I can't believe it's me. I am thinking more clearly, reacting more quickly, and feeling 100 times more lively than I have for years, since starting the Lugol's. I'm anxious to see how I feel in another month, if this continues. My personal bias is that drugs, in general, are to be avoided. And, as was pointed out to me in this group recently, I really needed to focus on what is the source, or cause, of my problems, not just find cures for my symptoms. Guest guest Posted January 17, 2003 Report Share Posted January 17, 2003 Dear Neil, According to Adele Davis in her book "Let's eat right to keep fit", she says that thyroxin contains iodine, and that a deficiency is iodine can produce problems. She also mentions that a deficiency of vitamin E can have the same effect, as vitamin E helps the body absorb the iodine. I don't have personal experience with this though. Guest guest Posted January 26, 2003 Report Share Posted January 26, 2003 Naturthroid is definitely a bandaid approach to this problem, and I'm surprised he recommended it rather than looking for the "Cause" of the problem. One of the best herbs for hypothyroidism is Astragalus. This herb stimulates your own production of Thyroxin rather than supplying it from an outside source as does Naturthroid which comes from the thyroid of pigs. Even though it certainly is better than drugs, it is still a bandaid. Love, Doc PS.
