Thanks, Norma My books says that it should be the smooth area no larger than 4 inches across. And to not take a strip all the way around, but to take small sections in different areas so that you don't cause damage or kill the tree. I think a smaller tree than I have in my yard would be easier to work from as our oaks are massive and BEAUTIFUL! We are in the forest, so I do have the option of harvesting from some smaller easier to reach trees when the season is right. (We are finally going to get some seasonable weather in the next few days and it is actually supposed to get below zero at night!
