Guest guest
As of late I've been doing a lot of thinking about the threat of EMFs on a daily basis. My dh and I both spend our days in front of our computers as we are graphic artists, and I'm really concerned about how that might be affecting our fertility. We are trying to conceive now and are now on month four. I am a student of nutrition and well aware of the role that diet plays in our fertility, so we are eating very well and also supplementing with the vital minerals/vitamins and making use of a number of herbal preparations. But this EMF thing is freaking me out a bit and I'd like to know if anyone has opinions on how we can protect ourselves (other than quitting our jobs which will be a possibility probably in the next few years but not now). Thanks so much, ILANA
Guest guest
Hi Amanda, No it's not a pry! I'm more than happy to share, especially if people might have suggestions. I was using the FAM method, ie - checking BBT's and matching it with primary fertility and secondary signs like cervical fluid and mittleschmerz and the like. I did that for two months then decided that I know enough about my body now to know when I'm ovulating as it's pretty obvious within a few days so I've stopped the temping as of this cycle. My concern, however, is that spending so much time at our computers is going to affect the quality of our seeds. I've got dh on vitamin C, E with selenium, zinc with copper and folic acid. I am taking C, E and folic acid and making use of teas and tinctures (Chasteberry, dong quai, squaw vine in tincture, and nettle, red raspberry, oat straw, alfalfa and number of others in tea form) to normalize my hormones. My cycles were going whacky after the pill and I restablished a normal pattern as well as strengthened the ovulation signs and my overall confidence in my reproductive ability. I hate having to monitor my fertility each morning using tools as I get hung up on the results, so I decided that from now on we'll just go by my signs and hope for the best! Ilana, I think the greatest risks from EMF's and computers is if you sit behind them (ie: you have workers behind you working on computers and then you are more exposed). I will double check this in my pregnancy texts later today for you too. I hope this isn't a pry, but have you heard of the "ferning" method of checking when you are fertile? You may not be doing any of this at all, just letting what happens-happen. But if you checking for and following fertility awareness, then this might be something that would interest you. You simply check your saliva daily using a microscope, and when ferning begins to appear you are starting your fertile time. When ferning is heaviest, you ARE fertile. I will post the instructions below for you too. You can use a normal inexpensive microscope to so this too. (There is a lipstick size microscope called the Lens that you can get for over $30 to do this too, but it is very hard to read the results on it.) I can also tell you that this WORKS! It is accurate by like 98%! It does match the nfp charting too (my sister tested this out so that I would know for sure). I know a number of babies conceived using this method-one of them being one of my own. <g> Blessings, Amanda ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reading saliva patterns: Best times to collect a sample are mid-morning, afternoon, or evening. Early morning tests may not be optimal, as hormone concentration may be too low. Some women test two times a day to confirm results or to note changes. IMPORTANT: Take NOTHING by mouth (food, liquid, toothpaste, etc) for at least 1/2 hour before testing to insure an accurate sample. Saliva Step 1: Clean and dry the slide. Saliva Step 2: Lick the slide lightly to create a thin film of saliva. (Lick just a strip in the center of the slide.) Saliva Step 3: Allow to dry fpr 20 minutes. Let the sample dry naturally. Do NOT blow on the slide or place near heat to speed drying. The results will stay on the lens until washed. Saliva Step 4: Read the slide, by looking through the microscope. (I use the 96X-144X reading.) Focus (zoom) until you have a clear view. You are looking for a ferning pattern. This looks like the crystals you see on a frosty window, or on the fern plant leaves. The first part of your cycle you will see just blobs on the slide. As you start into your fertile time, you will first see a small amount of ferning (you will know it when you see it), that increases until your fertile day (ovulation). That day the area you licked will be full of the ferning pattern. Then the ferning becomes slight and disappears. You may have a day or two of ferning just before your period begins (a nice warning to be prepared). It is that easy. They stress that this is *FERTILITY AWARENESS*. It is NOT the "Rhythm Method", which is a highly inaccurate system of predicting future cycles from a mathematical formula based on past cycles. In reality, female cycles vary tremendously from woman to woman and often within each woman herself. Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1. Guest guest
I forgot to mention that I don't just sit in front of one computer. I have two servers behind me, one screen and two great big printers as well. None of them have their backs towards me, though. I've read that we are exposed to one hundred times more EMF's than our grandparents were at the same time in their lives. One of my teachers once pointed out that if we went back in time 100 years and brought someone back with us here they'd probably die of radiation poisoning in a very short amount of time. How's that for evolution? ILANA "crawlerbunny " wrote: herbal remedies , Ilana Grostern <ilana@c...> wrote: > As of late I've been doing a lot of thinking about the threat of EMFs on > a daily basis. Guest guest
Dear Ilana, I agree with Amanda, just take the "must have" off of it, and chill out and have some fun. If you were to take "Wild Yam" for about a month (a natural contraceptive), you'd find that if you then stopped it at the end of that time, you'd be hyper fertile. Hope this helps. Love, Doc PS. It would also help if you were in excellent physical condition. So many couples get caught up in the "right time" that they take all the fun out of the 'couple act. ;)A book you might enjoy for this time before pregnancy and during, for labor, birth, and post partum, as well as for the newborn is Susun Weed's "Herbs in the Childbearing Year". It is really an excellent book! Cost is about $9. Don't know what I would have done without my copy! lol! :)Amanda
Guest guest
Hi Ilana, Apparently Vitamin E has a lot to do with fertility. When I wanted to get pregnant, both my husband and I took extra Vit E for about 3 months. I got pregnant right after we got married, which is what I'd wanted. I don't know how much the Vit E helped, but it worked :-) love, Lisa - Ilana Grostern Herbal Monday, January 06, 2003 2:49 PM [herbal remedies] Fertility and EMFs As of late I've been doing a lot of thinking about the threat of EMFs ona daily basis. Guest guest
Thanks Lisa. We're both taking 400IU of E daily, mixed tocopherols with selenium so we've go that one covered. We're also taking Vit C, about 2000mg a day when we can remember, but at least 1000mg and also folic acid, and he's taking zinc with copper. So I think we've got all the supplemental vitamins covered and the rest is making sure we both eat optimally. We just got married two months ago so hopefully it won't be much longer now! Guest guest
Well Congratulations!!! With vitamins, you need to ensure that you're not unbalancing your body by taking only certain vitamins and not others. It is much better to take a well balance multi-vitamin in normal cases, unless you have a severe deficiency in one particular one. Specially any of the B vitamins - usually it's better to take a B-complex which includes all the B vitamins, rather than one of the B-vitamins, as it throws all the other ones out of sync in your body. A very good source on vitamins for pregnancy/babies is Adele Davis: Let's have healthy children. It takes you from wanting to get pregnant right up to the toddler age of the child. Very good nutritional/vitamin information. This was my bible when I was wanting a baby. And I'd been on the pill for years, so wanted to make sure that I wasn't starting the pregnancy with a deficient body out-of-whack. And it was great - I had a great pregnancy - no problems at all. love, Lisa - Ilana Grostern herbal remedies Friday, January 10, 2003 9:50 PM Re: [herbal remedies] Fertility and EMFs Thanks Lisa. Guest guest
Ooooh!! Another book! I love those sorts of books. Thanks for the title, Lisa. I'll jump onto Chapters after I finish this and see if I can find it. As for the vitamins, we always take ours at meals and I try to make sure that what we eat has the vitamins needed to complete the synergistic relationship that exists between all vitamins. Also, aside from the folic acid/B12 supplement, the others are bundled with what they need to properly function. My nutrition teacher is very anti-supplement but I believe that there is still need in some cases when you have a hard time getting what is missing from food. And we're only going to be doing this for a short time anyways, until I get pregnant and then we'll just go back to very minor supplementation. I'm not big on multi-vitamins because the levels of most are pretty negligible even if they are geared for specific conditions. IF they are manufactured in the US they usually adhere to the RDAs established by that country, and for some of the vitamins those maximum amounts are just plain silly! For instance, the vitamin C RDA is a piddly 60mg! THat's kind of laughable in my opinion, and I don't want us to be popping more pills to have to make up for the shortcomings of the multis. I will take your advice to heart, Lisa. Thanks so much! ILANA xoxo Lisa Belcher wrote: Well Congratulations!!!
