Hi guys,

I took Jamie to the GP today, to ensure there wasn't a situation there which needed handling. Jamie's been complaining off and on of pain in the area of his penis/testicles. (Jamie is 4 1/2 years old).

The GP confirmed that his left testicle hadn't dropped yet, but didn't think that could be the cause of the pain/discomfort, as the pain is not constant. He did however recommend to see someone at the hospital for this, to see if surgery is needed. Any comments anyone? What is the average age for this to happen? Should I be concerned? Or is this quite normal and no handling needed?

Also, he found a redness on Jamie's penis inside, and gave us a cream for it: Timodine. The contents don't sound like anything I'd like to give Jamie. It says it contains an antifungal agent, a corticosteroid, and antiseptic and a water-repellent.(?) Can anyone suggest a natural remedy to handle this? And maybe a way to prevent it happening again? I'm not sure what it's caused by. BTW, Jamie still wears nappies, so this could be part of the problem.

Any advice would be most welcome :-)

love,

Lisa

I cannot really help with remedies, but I will add that my son at age

10, developed a very sore red penis, which we discovered was caused

from soap........he was given an ointment to clear up the soreness

and the prevention of recurrence of course is to wash the penis in

clear water only with no soaps etc.....actually the basic ruling for

all genitals and sensitive skin areas. I am wondering if a soothing

pure vitamin E cream would be way to go, maybe wash the penis gently

with clear water, ensure all dirt and residues are washed away, then

dry the penis thoroughly (pat dry for gentleness), then maybe apply a

vitamin E cream........

BTW, just a little trick I learnt when my son was a baby and

constantly getting nappy rash, the only thing that truely worked and

appears safe was good old fashioned cornflour...............no creams

and definately NO talcum powders.

My son had this when he was about Jamie's age (maybe at 5). The DO (Doctor Of

Osteopathy *) that I use indicated

that he needed to pull back the foreskin and keep his penis clean. Once I

started having him do that, the

redness/soreness went away. BTW, he was still in diapers (nappies) which is a

lot of the culprit on this.

Hope this helps for Jamie.

Thanks Marti :-)

I started doing this today also. His penis was less red today (due to a cold he had a few days ago, he's still on Total Tonic and Echinacea, so that might be helping there also).

I will continue this action then, thanks!

Hi Kristal, thanks.

The "soap" I use is 100% natural ingredients - no chemicals. However, I have been also putting bubble bath in the bath, which may be causing the problem. I have stopped this today, just in case.

I do have a good cream that works on nappy rash - the only problem I have with that, is that I don't know if it handles the problem, or whether it simply suppresses the rash back into the body (which some creams apparently do, if the rash is the body trying to get rid of something)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions :-)

Lisa, I am not sure what can be done about the testes, but if he is have pain on and off, perhaps it is just about to drop. As for the red line, Ben gets that on and off. I use a few drops of Lavender EO in his bath and it is not only calming, but any bottom owies simply dissappear. Ben potty trained just this August and still has accidents at night. He is 6 years old.

Hi Janet,

That sounds great. I'll try the oil. I do have some in the house, but thought it was just for relaxation :-)

For the redness I would suggest Tea Tree Oil. What are "nappies"?

Nappies are diapers. Tea tree oil has some very good uses. However, since Jamie is so young and it is a urine burn and not a fungus that causes the red line, adding a little Lavender or Chammomile EO to his bath would be less likely to irritate it further.

Thanks Janet. I did have my doubts about Tea Tree Oil. Seemed a bit strong for such delicate area skin. I use it for cuts on fingers and suchlike, and can't imagine getting it applied to the groin - ouch!

I did give him a bath with the Lavender oil tonight. He seemed okay with that. Thanks :-)

Lauren, Jamie has Down's Syndrome. Many normal children do not potty train at 2 or 3 years these days. It is sometimes much longer or never with special needs children.

RE: [herbal remedies] need advice for Jamie

Yeah, I was thinking that but I was wondering why a 4 1/2 year old was in them. That's why I am confused. I also am 3 & 1/5 months pregnant so I have "momnesia" which is what occures when the baby one is growing sucks the mom's brain cells:)

For the redness I would suggest Tea Tree Oil. What are "nappies"?
