Hi Tom,

Get some Slippery Elm bark and some Gentian Root and make a decoction. Use about 1/2 to 1 ounce of each and simmer in 2 pints of water for 20 minutes. Let it cool, strain and drink 2 - 3 Tablespoonfuls 3 times throughout the day before meals.

[herbal remedies] Diarrhoea

Something that none of us ever want but do sometimes get. I have a bout of the seasonal Gastroenteritis and am wandering if their is a herbal relief for the blasted thing. My wife went to the GP and was given Lomotil thinking she was coming home with a cure but I am sure it is just a masking agent.I would prefer to teach my own body how to handle this invader so next time it will be better prepared.I also suffer from insomnia whenever I get a stomach bug,I haven't slept for 3 days now.a few years ago I even took 5 Norminson sleeping tablets in one go and still didn't sleep,I've tried valerian in large doses. All makes me very drowsy but I cant take the final step into sleep. any ideas.

Thanks Heaps

what is a decoction?

Ken, you make a decoction when you boil your herbs in water instead of just pouring boiling water over them. You usually make decoctions (or alcohol tinctures) of roots or bark or hard other plant parts.

Tom, what a nasty virus. Red raspberry and or peppermint tea for diarrhea and nausea work for my family. Ginger root and feverfew can also be beneficial. Hope you get better soon.

Hello gang,

My son Jamie has a cold 2 weeks ago, so I gave him Total Tonic and Echinacea each day (1 dropperful per day each). The cold has now receded, but since 5 days he's having diarrhoea! I just figured at first that the remedies threw his body into a detox and didn't worry about it too much.

Also, Jamie has been eating dairy-yoghurt for breakfast. He is allergic to dairy milk, but some people can still tolerate yoghurt then, so I thought I'd try. Anyhow, I've taken him off that also, just in case this diarrhoea was a result of the yoghurt.

However, it's been 5 days now, and his bowel movement is still very watery, and seems to cause him discomfort.

He didn't eat very much the first few days, but since Saturday evening has been ravishing his food, so his appetite seems to be returned.

I just figured that since he'd been taking the remedies, there was no way it could be an infection.

Lisa, I Think Its Very Possible That Stress Could Be His Problem. I Alo Thik That Taking Him Off The Dairy Produts Was a Good Idea. Though You Say That Is Still Having Runny Bowls, Right Now As We Try To Figure This Out Your Son Is In Danger Of Dehydration. So Give Him Plenty Of Ligiuds, And Some Chamomile Tea, Is Will Settle His Tummy, Discomfort , & Stress. Make A Jug Full And Dilute In A Little Apple Juice If He Doesnt Like It. Also How About Some "Apple Cinnamon Tea" From Celestial Seasonings. "Its The Cinn. " Or Applesauce With Some Cinnamon Sprinkled On. I Have 4 Kids, This Works For Us. Grey Eagle.

Lisa, my son Joey had chronic diarrhea when he was Jamie's age. I used feverfew tincture and it cleared it up. There are many astringent herbs though and I am sure lots of people will give ya some good ideas there. Rice would be a good addition (pre sprouted of course) to his diet.

Thanks :-)

I tried the Chamomile tea, but he just won't have it, even when mixed with apple juice he tastes the difference.

Jamie doesn't usually drink much. I am aware of the need for fluid intake with diarrhoea, so give him as much as he'll take. he seems okay otherwise.

It's not really diarrhoea anymore, just watery poo. In the last few days it's getting somewhat better, so I guess he's on the mend. He's also eating normally again.

Again, thanks for your help.

The diarrhea could be from stress, and the recent illness. Blackberrys are excellent for diarrhea as a good astringent; blackberry leaf tea is great. Blackberry jam, the possibilities are endless. For children smushed bananas with sprinkled carob powder also works well and tastes good. For settling an upset stomach you can try a rice tea. Cook rice to make a tea, use the water, a little bit of vanilla, add a little cinnamon if you wish, and drink as much as desired. It helps settle an upset stomach quickly and tastes good.

I had thought about an allergic reaction after you mentioned the herbs, but since it seems to be going on so long I would put the option at the bottom of the list, personally.

If his appetite has returned, that is a very good thing; I am sure it would clear up soon.

Best wishes and blessings

Erin
