Guest guest
Dear Mike, Milk Thistle is second to none for "rebuilding" the liver, so it depends on whether or not this is your goal. There are many liver herbs out there for specific purposes and many of them are brilliant such as Dandelion Root, Oregon Grape Root, Gentian Root, Garlic, and Fennel Seed, etc. For cleansing the liver, you could add Cinnamon, Cardamon, Licorice Root, Juniper Berries, Ginger, Uva Ursi, Burdock, Horsetail, Parsley and Pau d'Arco. I wouldn't even get the time of day from GNC, and I'd recommend you connect up with a local Naturopath or Herbalist to get your herbal products (good chance they're not any more expensive, and you can bet they'll be twice the potency), or better yet, learn to make your own. There ain't nuthin out there as good as home grown. ;o) Love, Doc Dr. Ian Shillington505-772-5889Dr.IanShillington - mikes2boys herbal remedies Friday, September 13, 2002 3:06 PM [herbal remedies] Question Milk Thistle? Guest guest
Mike, It may not be the cheapest but it is one of the safest and gentlest liver herbs there are. As for being the best? It is all relative. Some people say yes some say Barberry, others Dandelion, Fumitory, Wild Yam, or Self Heal. There are a lot of herbs out there that have a specific action on the liver. Something else you might consider is doing some of the cleansings that you will find in the files. No, it probably won't help your pain, but then who knows. It might do more for you than you think. I will say that anybody can use a good cleansing no matter what. There is just too much pollution in this old world today. No one is safe from it. It is good that you are ambulatory. I know it is probably extremely painful to move around but then considering your options..... The road to true health begins with taking ones life into ones own hands. A little common sense and you cannot do any worse than the "current medical regime" at treating and healing yourself. Actually you will do better because unlike the medico who knows better, you will listen to yourself and your body. No I am not totally down on the medical profession. I agree, someone shoots me I am going to the hospital but only because I don't know if I can pull a bullet out of myself. I may have a high tolerance for pain and don't flinch at the sight of blood but digging around.... well never mind. As for dis-ease, however, I will take matters into my own hands. Sorry, I guess I got to rambling. Kathe what is that detox you were talking about? Don PS--Do a web search for Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum). You may be able to find it cheaper. Actually you can most likely buy a pound of organic seed for what you are paying now. Make a tincture with them or grind them up and eat them (they have a kind of nutty taste). You can make a tea with them but the silymarin is not water soluble. Of course grinding the seeds and capping them yourself would work as well. I have seen a pound going for about 20.00 bucks. I don't really know if this is a better deal for you or not. Seems the price of pre-capped is about the same give or take a buck or two. - mikes2boys herbal remedies Friday, September 13, 2002 2:06 PM [herbal remedies] Question Milk Thistle? Guest guest
Dear Don et al, I missed the earlier thread on this about the pain, but would like to throw in my two cents. Many have forgotten the ole hot water bottle, and hot and cold therapy (showers, baths, saunas, etc.) for the handling of pain. My son Bryan once was "stung" by a Sting Ray while swimming in FL, and as those who've ever had this happen to them can attest, the pain is awesome. He literally screamed all the way home. When home, I filled the bath tub with "HOT" water and he put his foot in it. In less than a second, the pain disappeared, and after 15 minutes in the tub, never came back. According to medical prognosis, it's supposed to hurt like the dickens for 24 hours. I've used hot and cold therapy on many a patient who was in utter agony with one pain or another and had the pain subside almost immediately. If it means getting in the tub 10 times a day, then so be it. It is better than taking all the drugs, and will give the body a chance to heal itself using an herbal regimen. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Mike, You can get milk thistle tincture from www.libertynaturals.com 16 oz for $19.14 plus shipping... the tincture would be better than the capsules till you could make it yourself... if this helps. If you can get the herbs and make it yourself it would be even better. I've found that the pills we can buy from GNC and other places just aren't as potent as they admit to being... Guest guest
Suzi, this is only my opinion. When it comes to something like the health of my liver, I want to know what I am getting. An herb like Milk Thistle has to be taken on a constant basis for it to be effective. If you take something with unknown variations in strength, it can defeat the purpose. I will only take a standardized Milk Thistle product. (Again, it's just " my " belief.)
Guest guest
That's a reasonable price. Nutrition for Life, a multilevel, has it for about $15 for 60 100 mg capsules. I've found that 100 mg taken only when liver symptoms are present works well, but considering the medications you're taking, you may need that larger daily dose. Remember, this is not an exact science. What works is what works, and that's all we really know for sure. Does Oxycontin cause constipation? Most opiates do. Thanks Doc, there goes that dang memory again. I will strive to remember this. You are right of course. Very little beats hot and cold therapy.
