Hi Lynn,

This sounds like an inflammed lactiferous duct (milk duct). Yes, I would suggest the compress and the echinecea, as well as, Essential oils of German Chamomile or Peppermint (organic only for any Essential Oil) as they are excellent anti-inflammatory agents. Or even some Helichrysum oil if you have them. She can add a couple of drops to a tsp. of massage oil or olive oil and then massage that area of her breast with it, then apply the hot compress. By all means have her drink an infusion of Echinecea tea. You can also make a fomentation of 1 part each of Marshmallow root and Chamomile flowers mixing with boiling water till it is poultice consistency. Apply hot to the area repeatedly. Or use 3 parts of Mullein and 1 part of Lobelia and make into a fomentation and apply it hot and cover it leaving it all night. Do this for 6 nights until relief is obtained.

[herbal remedies] Lump in Breast?

Hi folks, I have a just turned 16 years old daughter that is having pain directly under her nipple on her breast. There is a hard area that feels like a straight tube going backwards from her nipple, this is not in the other breast. I have never had mastitis and am wondering if this could be it? I really do not think it is the kind of area one would call cancerous as it is not a lump. She has had it for 3 weeks and it just got bigger so she is just telling me tonight. Consequently we have not done anything to treat this yet. I was thinking maybe hot compresses and echinacea? Is there a way to tell if it is a thing that should be looked at by a doctor? Hi Lynn,

Because I forgot to add it and in case you don't know how to make a fomentation: make a decoction or infusion of the herbs and dip a cloth in it. Wring it out and apply to affected area. Or as I did mention, make it like a poultice and just smear the whole kit-n-kaboodle on and wrap it.

Lynn, Devils Claw is an excellent anti-inflammatory also. I have used it myself very successfully. But I have discovered it works best if taken with a meal. Use the maximum dose to start with, and ease off as the pain goes.

Could be a cyst Lynn. If she drinks sodas or anything else with caffiene have her stop. It will make it worse. Usually cystic breasts are painful. Malignancies aren't caught much of the time because they don't hurt right away.
