I have bernese mountain dogs....and they usually get a pound of meat per day, plus some veggies, oils and nuts. I guess I just gauge how they eat (if they eat up everything and look for more), I give them more. And I also watch their weight.....in the summer I only feed once per day, but in the winter, when we are out alot more - they get fed twice per day......I remember when I started raw feeding, I was a mess, worrying about everything.....but, it is no different than feeding a child......you watch them, and if they are still hungry.....they give you signs. I also remember being very worried about a balanced diet.....but I don't eat a balanced diet everytime I eat.......it is balance over time.......and like I said before.....the terrain is everything. If you have a dog with a healthy immune system - just like people -- they can fight off most everything......and in a much faster time period. I board dogs in my home, and I walk my dogs in off leash parks where alot of other dogs are - they have never been vaccinated.......and they never get sick. It is the total picture with them too - they get massages, they get plenty of exercise and fresh water......it isn't unlike what Doc and everyone on this list wants us to do for ourselves. Sherry Sherry, How much do you give your dogs? Mine are about 70 lbs. Are mosquitos bad in MN? I'm in Memphis and just about every dog that I know that isn't on heartworm prevention has gotten heartworms. Thanks, Ann Ann I have not given heartworm to my dogs for over 6 years - I live in MN. I also do not vaccinate and I feed a raw diet to my dogs. The terrain is everything. I do give my dogs a herbal blend of wormwood/black walnut/tansy everyday - and I increase the garlic in the summer months....I have never had a concern about heartworm at all. I also work at a vet clinic (going on 5 years) and in all that time, have not seen one case of heartworm. But what I have seen is alot of people coming in the clinic with dogs being lethargic and not eating within 5-7 of giving the monthly heartworm pill.
