Michael, depression in children is NOT always caused by people hating them. My boys could care less what others think, because they don't even notice others most of the time. Joey will be 8 in October, and he falls easily into depressions. Right now he is not eating right, losing weight, crying a lot, etc. I will attempt to correct this with natural nutrition and Doc's most excellent advice in the files :-) He stops eating entirely and vomits when I am hospitalized. The hundreds of thousands of autistic kids (not to mention the spectrum disorders) do not fit your profile of why people get depressed.

First, please please i beg you to get a criminal investigation of thisdoctor started. He is prescribing incredibly dangerous drugs, which areclosely related in their chemical makeup and effects to illegal substances.A doctor who could do this for a kid is capable of anything, up to andincluding the most horrible crimes. This doctor should not be in practice, especially considering that he's putting you under such pressure.I get so mad when i hear about cases like this. There is no excuse! Mostpeople are not told this, but Adderall is simply a repackaged form ofDexedrine, which was rejected way back in the 1950s as unacceptable for mostpeople.Generally ADHD is simply being a kid. There is nothing wrong with a kidbeing a little antsy, particularly if subjected to being in an overcrowdedclassroom or under a poor teacher who didn't cover basics before going on todifficult material. Many cases of so-called ADHD have been resolved by justa few tutoring sessions! And many cases of depression and mood swing inkids have been resolved by changing the personnel they have to deal withevery day, either by transferring, getting someone fired, or homeschooling.I can't seem to say this enough: DEPRESSION AND MOOD SWINGS ARE CAUSED BYHAVING TO COPE WITH PEOPLE WHO HATE YOU.Yes, a few herbs have sometimes been known to help. Most promising isPycnogenol, which is an extract of a pine tree that grows in southernFrance. Changing diet has also helped, particularly avoiding excess sugarand artificial flavors. Dear Janet,

My son also has occasional bouts of depression (he's 4 1/2). Right now he refuses to go outside of the house perimeter, just wants to be with me, is very demanding on my attention, watches TV a lot, etc.. What I do in those situations is just let him be, try to provide an atmosphere as calm as possible around him, try not to get upset when he does something not quite okay, to let him regain his calm and cheerfulness.

Luckily I don't have to worry too much about his eating or not; I still give him his baby formula as a drink (he has Down's Syndrome, and the formula happens to contain many nutrients which are also recommended for DS, so I'll give him this as long as he'll drink it) and it is VERY nutritious and tastes good. Usually children using this formula will drink this even if not wanting to eat, so they still get their nutrients which will help them recover faster.

I make the Barley Formula myself, It is developed by Mr L. Ron Hubbard, and is as follows: (you don't have to be a baby to drink it, so your son may accept this drink also)

1. Put about half a cup of whole barley in a piece of muslin

2. tie it loosely to allow for expansion

3. and place it in the pot containing 4 pints of water

4. boil SLOWLY for 6 1/2 hours with pot slightly vented so steam can escape. Barley water will turn very, very pink. This gives about the right consistency.

5. mix the formula using a ratio of: 15 ounces of barley water, 10 ounces of homogenized milk, 3 ounces of corn syrup

6 keep the formula cold until feeding time

notes: use only pots containing NO aluminium. I use Stainless Steel pot which I use only for this barley water.

The amount of syrup can be varied - depending on the baby.

Hope this helps.

Lisa

Autism is very different from depression, and probably has a single biological

cause. You are correct in your statement that the profiles of depression do

not apply to autistic children. I really hope that research eventually pins

this down, because it is one of the most difficult problems we face these

days. One of the few clues that we seem to have in all this, is that the

proportion of autistic children is steadily rising, which would suggest an

environmental cause.

Depressed kids usually have nutritional problems AND somebody in their lives

who is working against their best interests. That person may be someone in

the school system, since right now many school districts are more likely to

retain teacher who hate children than those who love children. That's a sad

fact of life, and of course is not true everywhere. What i object to is the

way so many doctors are automatically turning to highly dangerous drugs to

deal with these problems. I suspect from other things you said that you feel

the same way, so we probably have large areas of agreement here.

Congratulations! That's very good news.

I understand that in New York there is now a law against school personnel

giving medical advice, and/or making medical demands of parents. In Minnesota

and New Jersey, this has been done by regulation. So there is hope!
