Ephedra

Methamphetamine can be synthesized from ephedra, as i understand it. This

is indeed one of the few dangerous plants out there. However, if used in a

traditional manner, with caution, it is a good medicine and cannot cause

harm. It is these non-traditional uses, such as concentrates and capsules

that are associated with all the problems.

One name for it is " Mormon Tea " . Another is " Joint Fir " . It is a common

plant in Utah and Nevada. You can find it almost everywhere. While the

Mormon religion prohibits conventional caffiene containing herbs such as

black tea, colas and coffee, ephedra is all right. It is very useful for

many types of nasal congestion.

Its use for weight loss is non-traditional. So is its use as an energy

booster. In these cases, the problem is not medical -- the problem is with

a modern lifestyle which puts too much stress on the body.

Ephedra (Ma Huang) is one of those herbs that should not be played with. Using it for "weight loss" or "energy boosting" is a misuse of a very good herb.

It can be used in asthma cases very successfully if used in the proper dosages and medium.

One of the best uses for it is in Nerve Regeneration and you'll see it in my Nerve Regen Formula in the files. And don't let anyone tell you that you can't regenerate nerve or brain tissue. You can and Ephedra is very helpful in doing so.

The mega doses used in all weight loss formulas is destructive and should not be promoted as one of its functions. My prime guinea pig, as y'all know is me ;o) and Valorie and I once went on a "weight loss" dosage of the stuff and were at each other's throats for the entire week we were on it and then finally realized that it was the Ma Huang that had caused this phenomenon. Large dosages of Ephedra can cause "Rages", and create a biochemical personality in an individual.

This is one of those herbs where you need to know what you're doing, and a little bit of it goes a long way. You still won't kill yourself with it, but why court trouble???

[herbal remedies] Re: Ephedra

Even before the latest talk over ephedra, I had reservations about it. I was thiking of using it for some extra energy. After doing a web search on it's basic properties, I decided against it. Ephedra is a powerful stimulant and can have harmful side effects. In this case, the reward wasn't worth the risks. As a fan of herbs, I'll also be the first to say that "natural" doesn't always mean "safe". It's not a black and white thing. I still think many other herbs have had some bad press that they don't deserve.
