Guest guest
Hi Laura; I was diagnosed with Diabetes II two years ago and decided to try the natural treatment rather than pills and so far its worked quite well. It wasn't easy in the beginning because there was so much to learn but its been worth it. Some things I've learned - drink lots of water and exercise as much as you feel comfortable with. I think those two things are most important for me . Also ,I found it very important to increase my fiber intake. What works for me may not not work for everyone but I did not remove any foods from my diet. I still have the occassional sweet, dessert or candy bar .... rather than eliminate I reduced some of the foods in my diet. Rice, white breads, pastas, potatoes - I reduced all these items. I eat a lot of fresh fruit but I know some folks with Type 2 cannot. When it comes to breads the darker the better - same goes for rice and pasta. And lots of fresh veggies .... I wish you well ... Guest guest
Those orders to " just lose weight " are horrible. It's like telling a guy starving in a ghetto that he just has to make more money. OK, the obvious has been stated. Now what? Diabetes is a solution to a problem. When you look at it that way, things may make more sense. You need more protein, less starch in general. Monitoring is an interesting discipline. I never did that because when i was diagnosed in 1981, easy home monitoring was a distant dream. I had to learn to perceive subtle body cues. There may be a correlation between blood type and diabetes. I want more data on this subject, so if you run across some, please do post it to the list. For sure there is some correlation with racial groups -- Native Americans and Irish in particular seem to be more susceptible. So if you're a member of either group, studying ancient dietary habits and conforming to those can be especially helpful. Frequent famines in ancient times may have had something to do with how this " disease " developed. It may be an adaptive mechanism. There is some evidence that adaptive mechanisms can develop in an existing gene pool. The exact way this happens is a complete mystery right now, since random mutations are definitely not the process. It may have something to do with the barely credible Rupert Sheldrake theory about " morphogenetic fields " from a few years back. Despite the fact that New Agers leapt on to the idea, it may have some validity, and interestingly enough was widely believed in many ancient philosophies. I've noticed that, for a lot of us, eating small snack-type meals throughout the day seems to work well. Of course that's not always possible, but a jar of nuts next to your computer terminal can be a good thing. As for losing weight, one thing that has really helped some people is a mental discipline. The useful part is to ask yourself what benefits you got from extra weight. Don't let anyone else tell you -- dredge it up for yourself. Sometimes, simply acknowledging these benefits and getting on with life has worked wonders. At 06:38 AM 8/19/02 -0000, you wrote: >Hi, > >I've just been diagnosed with Diabetes II.
