Well you're probably going to get more than you bargained for here. If we had

an honest government, aspartame would not be on the market. In fact it was

rejected by the FDA in 1975 for being too toxic.

Ever heard of Bathtub Gin from the 1920s? It's this stuff that some people

made at home when alcohol was illegal throughout the USA. If they didn't get

it right, they would end up with methanol, which is a poisonous form of

alcohol known to cause blindness and sometimes death.

Methanol is about 10% of the Aspartame formula. If the stuff is heated over

120 degrees, more of it converts to methanol. It may be a factor in Gulf War

Syndrome, as a lot of diet pop was shipped over there and allowed to sit out

in the sun before being given to soldiers.

In susceptible individuals, aspartame has been known to cause blurred vision,

headaches, liver damage, convulsions, and other health problems. So far it

has been difficult to determine who is susceptible, although many pilots have

found that the effects are worse when someone goes up to 20,000 feet. A

pilot's organization tried to get the FAA to issue an alert, but their request

was denied.

I personally had problems with it. From 1988 through 1993, i sometimes

consumed a lot of diet drinks at parties, since i am a diabetic and an

alcoholic. Often after these parties my vision would be so messed up that i

could barely drive home. I attributed the symptoms at that time to Denver's

legendary air pollution, and my vision problems were part of what went into my

decision to move back to Cheyenne. In the summer of 1993 i was first

introduced to data about aspartame, but did not immediately stop consuming

diet drinks. But later in 1994 i did stop, and i have never had that vision

problem since.

I know that some people (phenylketneurics) can get very ill on aspartame.

You will always see a bold warning under the ingredients list of any

pseudo-sweetened product w/ aspartame that says " warning:

phenylketneurics... " Now me, I'm not a phenylketneuric, but I can't go

*anywhere near* aspartame. It makes me dizzy, upsets my stomach and really

" tweaks me out " , rather like taking speed or a few pots of coffee might.

It also makes me prone to panic attacks, which I used to have (long history

of depression) but don't any longer (as long as I stay away from deadly

things like sugar-free gum!). I'm not on any medications that might cause

this, either; and it's been that way with me since I remember aspartame

coming out. So it definitely messes with some people. ;) --ST
