Hi all- long time no type.

You have to distill herbs to extract their oil. It is kind of like making

alcohol. There are some machines that are made that do this, but they are

like in the 100s of dollars. If you would like to chat off list I'll see if

I can find the " do-it-yourself " site I got my info from. Something much

easier is to make oil with oil. It is not as strong as the essential oil

you would get from distilling the herbs, but most of them have to be diluted

for use. To make herbal oil you use a crock pot- I purchase a small one

from Wal-Mart for under $10. You purchase the dried herbs- organic is best

and then pick your oil. Extra-virgin cold pressed organic olive oil is the

easiest and least expensive. I prefer jojoba oil, but not store bought. (I

get it from bostonjojoba.com.) Place the herbs- best one at a time- in the

pot and use just enough oil to cover the herbs. Cook on the lowest setting

for about three hour for leave and flowers, five for roots. After cooking

let set for a good while- 12 hours or so. Strain with a fine mesh sieve

(stainless steel) line with several layers of cheesecloth or a layer or two

of linen. Unbleached fabric is the best. After most of the oil is through

pick up the cloth with the herb(s) inside and squeeze out the rest of the

oil. Place in a glass or stainless steel container. Keep away from heat

and sun. You may want to add some vitamin E to give it a longer shelf life

or keep it in the fridge. Why not to use fresh or partially dried herbs- the

moisture content will speed the rate of spoilage in the finished product.

If you throw in some beeswax-unbleached after staining and reheat till

melted you can turn the oil into a salve.
