[herbal remedies] Menopause Cycle

Would someone please comment. How long does menopause last? I am 56 and have taken estrogen in the form of Estratest since 1988. First I had a partial hysterectomy, leaving only the ovaries, when I was 42 years old. That is 14 yrs ago. Do I really have to continue taking this? I have only two menopausal symtoms. I do struggle with insomnia, and occasional mood swing at the end of the month. But they are very light.During a pelvic exam the Dr says he can barely feel the ovaries as they have shrunken down in size. Somewhere I got the idea that women "might" have to take some estrogen for a short period of time. Recently I read where it isnt necessary after 5 yrs. I would like to use wild yam and chaste tree if I need anything. But first have to determine where I am in the stage. Your comments will be appreciated.MissMouthyHello Miss :-) menopause occurs when the ovaries stop producing eggs and the hormone levels decline. So your hysterectomy would not have caused early menopause. Therefore, you are probably just beginning to feel the effects of the hormone changes. My brief experience with allopathic estrogens was negative - didn't help at all. And being 33 with all of your females part suddenly gone was quite a shock to my body. I use a little fan and keep a small spray bottle of water at bedside to spritz my face with when a hot flash comes hehe!! Eating well, exercising, minimizing stress are all key. There are some great herbs that will help with symptoms, but it depends on which ones you have, and dealing with the whole body's imbalance is better than trying to swat the symptoms like flies. Best of luck to ya hon :-)

Janet,

I haven't gotten to that stage yet...think I'm getting close though...LoL... however, if you are having hot flashes, add a little peppermint tincture to that water... it will really help cool you down...
