Guest guest
Hi, I just joined and am glad to see that a group like this exists. I have a question in regards to women's health. I recently was told that I may have PCOS. The tests were inconclusive, but I do seem to have the symptoms. I do not want to take even the lowest and safest forms of synthetic hormones. I was told Dong Quai will help so I've been taking it for a few days. Are there any other herbs, vitamins and/or dietary changes that I can add? Thanks. Your link, in addition to the group files, has helped me to find useful resources and suggestions. I'm sure I'll find something that works. Again, thanks a lot. Guest guest
As far as I know, PCOS is related (if not caused by) insulin resistance. If you are not familiar with this term, you can learn about it by reading http://www.mercola.com/2001/jul/14/insulin.htm . This article will tell you how to test for insulin resistance (fasting insulin is one of tests) and what to do to reverse it by modifying your diet. Guest guest
Dong Quai doesn't work for everyone, so be aware of that. Watch yourself closely. A more gentle women's herb for general use in toning up the reproductive system is Wild Yam. It's usually sold in Chinese stores. Yes, I read about Wild Yam and am considering it as well. That seems to be highly recommended along with Vitex (Chaste Tree). So far the Dong Quai hasn't brought on my menses cycle, but I am feeling some strange sensations going on in the pelvic area. I'm a little worried about some slight cramping in one leg, but I'll monitor it. I'll give this herb a few more weeks before trying Wild Yam. I don't want to start taking too many things at once, because I won't know which is working and which isn't LOL. Plus, I want to be clear on how much of each herb will work for me if I need to increase the dosage. Thanks alot for your suggestion. :-)
Guest guest
Uh, the symptoms you mention here would indicate to me that you should discontinue Dong Quai immediately if you don't have a good Chinese style physician available. That leg cramping rings a big alarm with me. With any of these herbs mentioned here, dosage is hard to measure. A good Chinese style doctor will mix the herbs into capsules in his/her own office, with careful attention to proportions of herbs relative to each other. (I used to do this frequently for an Acupuncturist.) And the doctor will watch for symptoms such as you're reporting, because reactions to any herb indicate a new, deeper level of diagnosis. I think you're right, I had the some extreme sweating last night, even with the a/c on high. After reading your post I decided to write down the names of a few local Herbalists to call tomorrow and I won't be taking the Dong Quai until I consult with someone. My mother also expressed concerns over the leg cramps this morning, she was worrying about blood clots. They're very common on my maternal side (and the reason I don't take synthetic female hormones). I thought maybe I could go the natural way on my own if I just knew what to take, but I guess not. Well, no matter the cost, I'd still rather consult someone who will keep me on the natural path. Thanks for the warning and your suggestions. I'll post on whatever happens next. :-)
