Sow thistle is of the Aster family, there is prickly sow-thistle (Sonchus asper), common sow-thistle (Sonchus oleraceus), and perennial sow-thistle (S. arvensis). The young leaves of sow-thistles can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as a vegetable. To me the sow-thistles look more like a cross between a dandelion and thistle but unlike true thistles, sow-thistle has a milky latex. I don't know of any thing that talks about it being dangerous and causing infections though. But I have not researched it that extensively. Below are three pics of the three different forms.
