Guest guest
Everclear is 190 proof alcohol and is very good for tincturing. However, it is not sold everywhere. It is quite hard to find. Not all states carry it or will allow it shipped in. It is available in Arizona but like Maureen wrote, I am not sure which other states carry it. Guest guest
Hi Paz, Yes the higher the alcohol percentage the better the tincture and this is because the alcohol dehydrates the cells of fresh plants drawing the constituents into the alcohol. I do suppose that lower proof alcohol might work but not as well. This is why we all use Everclear, moonshine, straight ethanol, or whatever we can get our hands on that has a very high octane rating. ) Don - Paz Pacita herbal remedies Monday, July 22, 2002 7:32 PM Re: [herbal remedies] Tincture question Everclear Hi Don,Thanks for info.....I'll assume that from all the info....higher the proofbetter the tinctureLove paz--- Donald Eitner <eitner.d wrote:> Hi Paz,> > Yes you can use 150 proof rum if you wish.> Alcohol is alcohol. 190 proof is always better at> extrating the plants constituents though.> > Don> - > Paz Pacita > herbal remedies > Sunday, July 21, 2002 11:56 PM> Re: [herbal remedies] Tincture question> Everclear> > > Hi all,> > Thanks for inputs....I'm down under in Australia I> check tomorrow if any carries everclear.....in the> meantime...> > Must I use vodka , for vodka the highest proof is> 80> prrof, I can buy 150 Proof rum, is that ok?> > Love ya all,> paz> > > --- Donald Eitner <eitner.d wrote:> > Everclear is 190 proof alcohol and is very good> for> > tincturing. Guest guest
No, no, no!!! Never use Rum, Scotch, Gin, or any other alcohol other than pure grain alcohol as in Vodka, Everclear or other pure alcohol / distilled water combination. Rum, Scotch, Gin, etc, have other chemicals in them, and some of these chemicals are on the same level chemically as fuel oil. Others have these chemicals plus sugar. Never use any alcohol in a tincture other than a pure ethanol / distilled water combination. Never, never, never!!! Much love, Doc PS. Using more than 100 proof alcohol in almost all tinctures is redundant and a waste. On a tough root (Ginseng, Poke, etc.) , I might use up to 120 proof, but no more. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Dear Don, Sorry to put you off here, but I just don't have the time to rummage around through my files trying to find this data. If you wish, I suggest you do some research for yourself on this. One of those things where the data stuck in my head after having read it 5 or 6 years ago.
