Guest guest
Hi Justine. Thanks for your reply. The trouble is that I'm completely ignorant of soapmaking. Do you think you could explain how to make this soap to a newbie?? If you can, I would be so grateful, cause I plan on trying. First, how do you extract the oil to make the peppermint oil ingredient in the soap? Actually, I'll probably use spearmint, cause I have more of it. Thanks, Skippy JUSTINE CRANE wrote: Skippy, I'm a soap maker, what do you want to know? Justine - Skippy Wednesday, July 10, 2002 9:01 PM herbal remedies [herbal remedies] Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap Hi All: I know that Dr. Bronner's does not use organically grown herbs, but I would like to know if anybody knows how to make this from scratch, using my own organic mints. I wish this were a certified Organic product but it is not. I love this scent, al! so. The label says that it is made of: Water, saponified Coconut-Hemp-Olive Oils (with retained Glycerin), Olive fatty acids, Peppermint Oil, Rosemary extract. Does anyone know how to make it? Thanks, Skippy
Guest guest
You may not be able to extract a whole lot of scent from your spearmint -- the best way, however, would be to infuse them in organic olive oil in a cool place for at least 2 weeks. Stuff a clean, sterile mason jar with as much spearmint leaf as you can, pour the olive oil over the top until it just covers the leaves, put on the lid and wait 2 weeks. Then pour off the oil into another clean, sterile jar and start the whole process over using the same oil over and over again with fresh leaves. You may have to do this 2 or 3 times before you get a really strong, green oil. Or you could just order an ounce of organic spearmint essential oil from any number of companies that sell organic. It's usually too costly and time consuming to try making your own. If you'd like, I can send you a soap making primer that I've written that will teach you how to make crock pot soap. It's probably one of the fastest ways to make handmade soap and one of the easiest, too. E-mail your address to me at sapobubbles and I'll be happy to send the primer. It's kind of a long, drawn out process, this soap making gig -- it's much easier having a cheat sheet in front of you.
