Guest guest
Hi, this is my first posting. I want to ask about garlic and what it can be used for. We've had a lot of trouble with headlice and I read today that taking Garlic will help get rid of them and keep them away. I have a 10 year old and wondered if taking Garlic oil capsules is alright for her or should I just add fresh garlic to our meals. I experimented, figuring that if Garlic works taken internally then what would happen if it was applied externally. I mixed the oil with my shampoo and washed my hair, after letting it sit for a few minutes I combed and found a couple of dead lice. I did the same for my daughter and combed out many dead lice. I don't know if that was the right thing to do but I was getting desperate, and was pretty close to grabbing the scissors. Cheryl
Guest guest
Hi Cheryl: I have an excellent book on garlic (listed later) and it mentions children as young as 12 ingesting raw garlic. (In cultures outside the U. S. they start much earlier than that.) I think that it would probably have to be mixed with something or prepared in a way that would be palatable for her. Studies done by the University of North Carolina have found that cooked garlic has antibiotic properties when eaten, if it is left to stand for at least 10 minutes after being peeled or chopped. When cooked right after peeling, it did not have this antibiotic property when fed to mice. The book mentions garlic oil as a topical application for a number of things from sores and itches, to ear aches. The recipe it gives for garlic oil is: ---- ¾ cup finely minced fresh garlic in a wooden or plastic mixing bowl (Why the wood or plastic, I don't know) Add ¾ cup of virgin olive oil, slowly, a ¼ cup at a time stirring as you do so. Place in a covered glass jar and set it in a window where it can get lots of sunshine. Let stand for 1 ½ weeks. On the eleventh day, strain the contents through several layers of cheesecloth and store the oil in the refrigerator. To avoid rancidity, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil or glycerine as a preservative. The book also mentions giving chopped raw garlic fed to dogs (mixed with their food) to keep fleas off of them. Sounds like you made an excellent choice for head lice. Jay The book I referred to above is the best book on garlic that I have found. I have no connection with the author or publisher, and don't sell books. I found it first in my local library, then went out and bought a copy. "The Healing Benefits of Garlic" by John Heinerman, PhD. He has also authored "The Complete Book of Herbs and Spices" and is editor-in-chief of the quarterly "Fold Medicine." Just trying to point out that this guy is into alternative medicine. <<Hi, this is my first posting. I want to ask about garlic and what it can be used for.
