Anyone know, for making Black Walnut tincture, do I just throw in the

whole green fruit and cover with liquid? Husk, nut and all? Or do I

open them up? Peel off the husk and use only that? Also must I wait

until they fall off the tree in august or so? Or can I pick them now

and use them?

Any tips would be helpful - thanks

The way I have always tinctured black walnut is the whole nut but I did cut

them in half first. I have picked them from the tree - and always before

they get too ripe.

Dear Thessa,

Best is to let them ripen on the tree until after the hull expells the nut. Wait until the hull starts turning color (to black) and then pick and let dry naturally. Do not heat. After they have fully dried and turned all the way black, you can grind, powder, and then tincture using 100 proof vodka. You are using only the hull here.

Love,
