Guest guest
Hi: Here is a site that lists the herbs that are known to conflict with surgery, including my favorite, garlic. Many of the herbs they list are blood thinners, and shouldn't be taken in the days before surgery. Jay http://www.msnbc.com/news/598520.asp The herbs they list: Among their recommendations: Gingko biloba can raise the risk of bleeding. It should be discontinued at least 24 hours before surgery. Garlic also prevents clotting and should be halted at least 36 hours before surgery. Ginseng can increase bleeding and exacerbate low blood sugar and should be discontinued at least seven days before surgery. St. John’s wort can speed up metabolism and interfere with other medications and should be stopped at least five days before surgery. Ephedra can cause irregular heartbeat and should be discontinued at least 24 hours before surgery. Kava can exaggerate the impact of anesthetics and should be stopped at least 24 hours before surgery. Valerian also can increase the sedative effect of anesthetics but no data is available on when to halt use. Echinacea poses a risk of poor wound healing and infection but no data is available on when to discontinue use.
Guest guest
I am new to the group, but had a few questions. Looks like a great ACTIVE group, not many of those around! Anyhow, my sis is having disc surgery and I will be caring for her for a few weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions of teas or tinctures I can give her that will help her healing? She does have high blood pressure and cholesterol and is on a morphine patch right now to get her over the hump until the surgery. Seeing as how she is on meds for the blood pressure and morphine, I am unsure as to what will possibly conflict or any contraindications with herbs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! We have an herbal shop here in town and I can get most herbs there. Thanks for any help! Carlin
Guest guest
Wow thanks! That was quick! I guess what I am really looking for are recommendations on what to pump into the poor woman to help speed her healing. She is very slow to heal and I thought maybe some herbal teas, echinacea, raspberry leaf, ect would help. I am just not sure which to use more post-surgery and what would do her the most good. And what would not interfere with her current meds. We will definately not be using anything pre-surgery from you list though, and I thank you for the reply.
