Hi Sherry,

I heard the study was flawed or a small number of people were used (or

something I can't remember now) about the study with kava, but I was

at the Dr's office yesterday and read in a common Good Housekeeping

or Better Home's and Gardens magazine an awful story about a woman

who took kava in a concoction of supplements in a daily package and over the

next weeks and months, developed kidney failure and needed a transplant.

She was really young and had no other " factors' either. So, I'm afraid to

take the kava now. I also developed super dry skin on it twice, years ago,

and I got better going off of it the first time, but didn't the second time.

My liver tests ok though. I always suspect hypothyroidism with the dry

skin, depression, and other signs, but they only run the T3 test and that

doesn't diagnose a lot of people.

I, like you, am on a lot of medications, and don't want to risk anything

further. I had a cardiac arrest almost 4 years ago at 49, developed

diabetes since, and had triple bypass this year, so I'm on heart, diabetic,

depression, sleep, and anxiety meds. I've always been one to try the

natural route, but with all this, it got so bad. Hoping to start doing a

yoga tape I bought for beginners, as I remember doing yoga years ago

and how great it made me feel. I used to go to a massage therapist

and the effects do last longer than a day if you find a good one. I can't

afford it now or anything much, as I haven't been able to work and

haven't bothered trying to get help as it takes too long and a person gets

turned down too many times.

I have read from many sources that if you don't get regular sun (20 min

daily) or live in the northern hemisphere, that taking cod liver oil is

supposed to help with depression as it has Vit D in it and is a good

source of omega 3's. I found a good brand of capsules and it seemed

to help, but you have to take too many capsules, so now I've ordered

the Carlson's lemon flavored cod liver oil through Vitacost where it's

on sale now. Dr. Mercola's site bragged up this brand and a consumer

testing site rated it mercury free (which you have to be careful of with

fish oils). But, anyway, fish oils are supposed to be helpful for depression

also, and so you get both in the cod liver oil.

My Dr's aren't into supplements either, but I know they get little training

in nutrition and their main source of info are the drug reps.
