Lama Jigme Gyatso: Rime Manipa Tantrika

What is it that keeps us stuck?

What is it that keeps us stuck

in Sam-sa-ra’s perpetual cycle of suffering?

Could it be, because we’ve done bad stuff?

Could it be, because we’re not good enough?

Could it be, because we have failed to wrap our minds around

an intellectually elusive philosophy?

What if the answer was far simpler?

What if the answer was much easier?

What if it was all due to grasping?

Grasping at me,

grasping at you,

grasping at us,

grasping at them,

grasping at confusion,

grasping at sadness,

grasping at greed,

grasping at anger,

grasping at pride,

grasping at selfishness,

grasping at jealously,

grasping at fear,

grasping at pleasure

and grasping at pain.

How then, how do we break

this ancient, pre-cognitive habit

of grasping at every thing, being and phenomena?

By pleasurably relaxing into the simple awareness

of every: thing, being and phenomena

that manifests in our experience of NOW.

At first we are ignorant of our ignorance;

or in other words, we do not even know

that pleasurably relaxing into the simple awareness of THIS present moment

is even an Option!

Then we are aware of our ignorance;

or in other words, we read or hear of the notion

of pleasurably relaxing into the simple awareness of THIS present moment

but we have NO idea how to make this happen in any meaningful way!

If we have the very good fortune and the spiritual ambition

to encounter a teacher who is genuinely: compassionate, insightful and

effective

we could Request the teachings, Receive the teachings,

Practice the teachings and consequently Accomplish the teachings

to the point that we achieve conscious competence;

or in other words, the ability to occasionally:

pleasurably relax into the simple awareness of THIS present moment,

but only temporarily and with great effort.

If we receive and enthusiastically as well as gratefully accept

the guidance and blessings of a Lama who is truly compassionate, insightful

and effective

our practice could bear the fruit of UN-conscious mastery;

or in other words, our practice

of pleasurably relaxing into the simple awareness of THIS present moment

could grow to the point of being truly: effective, spontaneous and habitual!

All of the Buddhas’ teachings of Sutra and all of the Buddhas’ teaching of

Tantra

come down to effectively, spontaneously and habitually:

pleasurably relaxing into the simple awareness of all of THIS present moment’s

things, beings and phenomena

Anything other than this…

Is - A - Distraction.

There are many distractions on the path to enlightenment.

Tantra’s yogas of Body, Speech and Mind are good;

but they can be abused, and become mere distractions from the path’s ultimate

aim

of pleasurably relaxing into the simple awareness of THIS present moment.

Sutra’s teachings of Renunciation, Compassion and Insight are good;

but they can be abused and become mere distractions from the path’s ultimate

aim

of pleasurably relaxing into the simple awareness of THIS present moment.

I was recently told,

“Here is the question that I am wrestling with: ‘I absolute truth

impermanent’”.

This is NOT an empowering question.

This is NOT a helpful question.

This is a question that tears us out of the present moment’s bliss

and throws us out into the abyss of conceptualized asceticism.

Why “wrestle” with anything?

Wouldn’t it be better to simply relax?

Wouldn’t it be better to simply relax into the simple awareness of

impermanence?

Wouldn’t it be better to simply relax into the simply awareness of

NON-grasp-ablitiy?

But in all fairness we can’t just leave that fellow

marooned in the morass of pseudo-intellectual conundrums.

So here is how it works.

#1 Many folks say that everything is impermanent,

and so they can then wonder

“hey, is ultimate truth also impermanent?”

#2 But Lord Buddha actually taught,

“…all compound phenomena are impermanent…”.

It is also taught that the Ultimate nature of all phenomena

is NON-compounded.

#3 Therefore it is safe to conclude:

a) All {compounded} phenomena are always Ever-changing

and therefore are always empty

of anything static or permanent to grasp.

b) All {compounded} phenomena are always Inter-dependent:

they are effected by their Causes, they are effected by their Components,

they are effected by their Conditions and they are effected by Perceptions.

They are always Inter-dependent:

and are therefore always empty

of anything separate or independent to grasp.

#4 What then are “Compound phenomena?”

What are things with parts?

Everything!

Everything, BUT one thing!

What is this one thing that will always be there?

The Nature of everything!

Intellectually understanding the Ever-changing nature of everything

renders it NON-graspable

and you will Intellectually realize

the NON-graspable nature of everything.

Emotionally understanding the Ever-changing nature of everything

renders it NON-graspable

and you will Emotionally realize

the NON-graspable nature of everything.

Viscerally understanding the Ever-changing nature of everything

renders it NON-graspable

and you will Viscerally realize the

NON-graspable nature of everything.

Make these realizations habitual and spontaneous

and Full realization will truly be eminent!

Now let’s really have some fun with this.

Think back to High School.

Think back to Geometry class.

Do you remember the transitive property of equality?

If “A” = “B”

And “B” = “C”

Then “A” = “C”

How could this have a spiritual application?

If Chen-re-zig, the Buddha of Compassion,

has the ultimate nature of being NON-graspable;

and I have the ultimate nature of being NON-graspable,

then we SHARE the same ultimate nature.

Conventionally your nature is NON-grasp-able.

Ultimately your nature is Chen-re-zig!

And that is why Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche taught:

“Chen-re-zig is one with the primordial nature of your own mind;

do NOT look for him elsewhere.

In order to realize this nature within yourself,

Request and Receive the teachings with unfabricated, heartfelt Devotion;

then contemplate and assimilate them into your being.

Finally you will achieve ultimate realization.

All karmic tendencies and obscuring emotions will dissolve,

and you will know directly the voidness of all phenomena.

At that point you will unwind into a state of rest,

far form the torments of Sam-sa-ra.

Like a serine old man watching children at play,

you will view with unshakable equanimity

the every-changing display of unreal phenomena.”

Guglielmo Marconi did not invent Radio Waves,

but he did invent a device that accessed pre-existing radio waves.

Chen-re-zig’s ultimate nature

pervades every: thing, being and phenomena

just as a rosary’s strong thread passes through the center

of each of it’s beads.

By performing the Sutric and Tantric practices

we tune into our inner Chen-re-zig

and his Peace, Insight, Compassion, Love, Bliss and Joy

just like tuning into your favorite radio station,

while driving to work, in the car, in the morning.

How do we habitually, spontaneously and pleasurably relax

into the simple awareness all that manifests in the eternity of the NOW?

By receiving the teachings and practicing the teachings

the accomplishment of the teachings is as inevitable

as the rising of the morning sun

after a long and interminable night.
