Newbie with questions about Aromatherapy Posted by: " bethany " bethany_riebock bethany_slp2b Fri Aug 4, 2006 3:42 pm (PDT) Hi, I just joined today because I've started becoming more serious about using alternative means to live better. I've taken my first step by beginning to use aromatherapy essential oils for body care and other practical uses. I became inspired to use EOs after I started taking yoga sessions where my instructor uses aromatherapy while we lie in our final relaxation pose. I got a jump start with the books " Essential Beauty " and " Beauty and the East. " Anyhow, here are a few questions that I've been pondering for a while. 1. Is bergamot oil really something that shouldn't be used often? It's one of my favorite scents, but I've read in several places online (and in " Essential Beauty " ) that it may have some carcinogenic qualities to it. I have not heard that it is carcinogenic but it does cause sensitivity to the sun so you want to make sure you stay out of it when you are using it. It can also interfere with the intake of potassium if used in large amounts. 2. Where can I find good containers for my EO body care concoctions? I've looked around online, but I can't seem to find a site where I can buy a set of cobalt or amber bottles. Any suggestions? Try these sites: _http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom & ID=29 & gclid=CMzOsfCJ\ yYYCFTRTCwodCl783g_ (http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom & ID=29 & gclid=CMzOsfCJ\ yYYCFTRTCwodCl783g) _http://www.snowdriftfarm.com/cobalt.html_ (http://www.snowdriftfarm.com/cobalt.html) _http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/supply/bottles.php_ (http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/supply/bottles.php) You might also try Ebay and see what they offer. 3. What is the best EO diffuser out there? I would like to start using my EOs to scent my home, but I would like to avoid using burners that require a candle (have to keep buying candles then!). These sites carry an electic burner....no more candles _http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/shop/bin/pxisapi1.exe/catalogue?level=600360_ (http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/shop/bin/pxisapi1.exe/catalogue?level=600360) _http://www.dreamingearth.com/aromatherapy-diffusers.htm_ (http://www.dreamingearth.com/aromatherapy-diffusers.htm) You might also try beeswax candles instead also. 4. I recently purchased patchouli EO by NOW foods. I used it once, and the second time I went to use it, I felt that it turned rancid. I went back to my supplier and replaced the bottle with a new one. I later realized that it was from the same batch, and I didn't test smell the oil before I left. When I got home, it smelled like the other one. I'm wondering if maybe I don't know what patchouli oil is supposed to smell like! I know what patchouli incense smells like...it's very dusky and heavy...maybe oil is different? Whenever I open my patchouli bottle, it smells like there's almost a tinge of acidity in the scent (makes my nose twinge with distaste). I tested it on a paper towel overnight, and when I sniffed it in the morning, it still wasn't " right. " Should patchouli EO smell like patchouli incense from the start? I think the patchouli EO is stronger than the incense. You might try a different brand and see if you get different results. It's possible that is is rancid also or that you just don't like the smell of it. Many don't. Hope this helps you some. Blessings, Mythi Thanks for any suggestions!
