Howdy... I just joined today, and I wanted to ask, for those who

practice yoga, do you think that it is an effective workout, to

maintain muscle tone and/or muscle size? I'm a 33 year old male, in

pretty decent shape, but I've been lifting weights and such to maintain

mass and muscle tone, etc.

But I'm getting to the point where I simply prefer yoga at home. It

seems like I'm getting a pretty decent workout, though it doesn't

spotlight muscle groups as much as weightlifting. I'm afraid that if I

drop the gym, I may lose the " fit " look that it provides. What sort of

experiences have you all had with this?

I try and combine both. At this point in my life (46) I have been

working out with weights regularly for 19 years. I usually go to the

gym 3 times a week. My aim, like yours, is to maintain muscle mass

(which keeps metabolism up and fat down). I always feel better, all

around, as long as I am working out regularly. I also do some

cardio--joggy mostly, but not as regularly.

I have done Bikkram's yoga--hot yoga, which I really enjoyed once I got

into it, but it also meant traveling to a studio, monetary costs, and

time. More regularly, I do yoga at home. If nothing else, I do sun

salutations. It amazes me, each day, how much difference even that

simple set of movements makes in how I feel.

Ultimately, I think the weigh work is important to keep muscles

challenged, but the yoga adds stretching and flexibility to the body as

well. I have also learned that one can practice mindfulness with

weights as well as with yoga and meditation.
