Guest guest
I started smoking at 16 till I was 29. It was one of those things I always wanted to quit but kind of never the right time, wait till this party or that event or that month might be stressful. In other words I didnt truly want to quit. Then I was on holiday and I got a phone call that my father has been hospitalised. He had severe bronchitis. He was 64 at the time. He had been smoking since he was 16. The doctors said either you stop now and live well into your 90s or you will be dead in a couple of years. My mother told him if he didnt stop she would leave as she wasnt going to watch him kill himself. He stopped and we were all so proud of him and encouraged him. Then a few months later he went away for a week with my mother and he drove her mad, it turned out he hadnt stopped smoking he had been smoking secretly and he was dreadful towards my mother saying vile things that only a drug addict would say because after all that is what he was. When they returned my mother was a mess, she didnt know what to do as she said she couldnt hurt a dog and leave them in the street how could she do that to my father. I have always been the one who sorts the family feuds and problems out and the one who goes and does the dirty work of telling people things straight. I never wanted that job it just happened that way. I couldnt say a word, because I was a smoker. So that night I threw my cigarrettes away. I couldnt have a go at my father and tell him what I thought of him because I would have been a hypocrite. It was hard really hard, but sheer anger got me through it. I have to say I put on weight because I took up sucking lollypops instead! But if you really want to do this, stick at it. It is worth it in the end. Its true what they say, food tastes so much better and life is wonderful.
