Problems taking Calcium

Hi

My dear friend seems to be having a problem when taking Calcium

supplements. She has tried numerous brands and it seems they all cause

her to become constipated and her intestinal tract just gurgles. She

also gets a build up of gas too. From what she told me it happens no

matter what form of Calcium she has tried. Last one was Calcium

citrate with Mag. All the brands she tried had very minimal other

ingredients. She does have divaticulitus (Spelling) but she has had no

problems with any flare ups. She watches what she eats.

As for other medications she is taking some BP med, some nasal spray

for bone loss, and a cholesterol pill. Her doc said she needs to take

the calcium for the nasal spray to be effective.

So I'm wondering if anyone would have a clue as to why a person would

have intestinal problems while taking Calcium.

Hi Gwen, Was your friend taking calcium tabs or pills?

She might want to try one of the chewables instead.

Does she take digestive enzymes with her supplements?

As we get older, our digestive system no longer works

well. Anyone over 40 should be taking digestive

enzymes with every meal. And, for this reason I always

recommend that people take their supplements in liquid

form if at all possible. Melba

Gwen, I wonder if the calcium supplement is milk based, and she is lactose intolerant.

I take BP meds, too. And I like the chewable chocolate caramel calcium (so many c's (ha)

supplements (Spring Valley, Walmart)

Tell her to try these remedies for the constipation:

raisin toast with cinnomin (Arnold's) with butter and cold grapefruit juice, taken first thing in the morning

cold apple juice (useful in pregnancy when you can't take anything else)

a spoonful of honey

hot water (or tea) with lemon

natural vegetable laxative (senokot, or equivalent)

physical activity

If she has any concerns about Bipolar, there is a forum I post to:

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?msg=42009.5 & nav=messages & webtag=ab-bipolar

I hope this helps

Hi Melba

Thanks for your reply.

She has tried both Tablets and capsules and still gets the same

results. When she stops taking the calcium things clear up. I know

she said her tummy started to act up when she started to take some

Acidopholis. Makes me think that maybe the good are moving in kicking

the bad out which might be causing the upset when she took that.

I have mentioned taking digestive enzymes to her.

Any paticular brand you found beneficial. I do think she might

benefit from them.

Thanks again

Gwen

Hi Gwen, Your comment about her tummy acting up when

she started taking acidopholis is a big clue.

Acidopholis is the good bacteria we need to have a

healthy gut. If she had gas, bloating etc. it was

caused by the action of the good bacteria killing off

the bad and replacing it. That can cause some

uncomfortable days while your gut is being healed and

the good bacteria take over and begin to work. And, it

is very normal to go through this. Holistic health is

about bringing the whole body into a state of good

health and well being, which takes some time after

years of neglect. When you begin to introduce raw

fruits and vegetables, digestive enzymes or other

things to increase health, you will have a few days or

even weeks of discomfort until the body adjusts. But,

if she cannot even take calcium or acidopholis without

upset, then that suggests that she has been eating a

steady diet of sugary and overprocessed foods for a

long time. That diet is a killer. Any good digestive

enzyme supplement should include the following:

Betaine,Pancreatin, Amylase, Protease, Bromelain,

Papain, Pepsin, Lipase, Celluase and if possible some

Ox Bile. The bile is because her gall bladder is

probably not functioning properly. In order to regain

her health, she must first get her body to function

properly again. It is a serious thing for without

calcium and magnesium her muscles (including the

heart), her brain and her nervous system cannot

function properly, and the bone loss is crippling. And

if her gut is so unhealthy that she cannot absorb them

then she must work on returning it to a healthy state.

I know no one likes to start something that is going

to make them feel bad for the first few days. But,

it's sort of like having a baby...you go through the

pain...then you get the joy. She may be resistant to

this at first...most of my clients are, but if she

will just start the process by taking the enzymes and

then adding yogurt or acidopholis to her diet, I

believe she will see results. Yogurt is always a good

starting point as you get the calcium and the

acidopholis at the same time. I hope she will soon be

returned to good health.

As a side note, everyone should put a stool under

their feet when they are on the commode having a bowel

movement. It puts the body in more of a squatting

position which correctly aligns the body for proper

elimination of waste. It also empties the lower bowel

more efficiently and eases pressure and gas. For more

information see Dr. Bernard Jensen's Guide to Better

Bowel Care. Dr. Jensen also wrote the book Foods That

Heal.

Sorry to have run on so, but every holistic health

practioner knows that without a healthy gut, truly

good health is impossible. Peace and good health to

you and your friend. You are doing a good thing by

trying to help her. Melba

You should have her try Extreme X2O. It has 900mg of Calcium that

you add to your water with a little satchel, or teabag. When the

minerals touch the water they become ionic allowing them to be more

bioavailable and bioabsorbable into the body. Shouldn't be any

constipation with this product. You can make money for taking the

product too. Cut and paste the link to find out more.

Good Luck!
