Guest guest
Hi, In my second-to-last cholesterol test; mine was high. And you're right, the first thing my Dr. wanted to do was put me on Lipitor. Since I'd already read up on the side effects of this drug; I refused and requested a repeat test in a couple of months. I went home (took my test results with me), and called the American Heart Association in my area. I got a person who also had had high cholesterol, and also didn't want to take medicine for it - she asked me to read off my test results to her and when I did she was laughing as hers " had " been almost identical. Hers is within the normal range now. Her supplement suggestion was garlic pills - she chose Garlique brand as it didn't bother her stomach as some of the others do. She also cooks with garlic, eats a lot of oatmeal (which I like), and fruits and veggies. No deep fried foods. The American Heart Association has an entire packet of things, that they sent me of what to eat and what not to eat for lowering and maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol. I even got recipes! Though many-times, it is hereditary, you can still, with a change of diet, lower yours. My Dr. called me for a repeat test in only a month, and was she surprised when my cholesterol had gone down...........a LOT. And I didn't really change that much of what I'd been doing. Well, I was watching what I stuffed in my mouth! I wanted to try lowering mine by myself first and it was amazing how the Dr. tried to discourage me from it. I now have a different Dr. Some of the things to definitely change are how we read labels on foods. I no longer use margarine or butter, but a substitute and there are many out there that taste good. Look on labels for things that have no trans-fats, no or not much saturated fats, no cholesterol, no hydroginated fats, and if you use oils in cooking; try switching to healthier ones such as Safflower, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil or Sunflower Oil. The Omega 3 oils, either in oil form or in capsule form, available at any natural food store help as well - they're the fish oils and also flax seed oil. There are a lot of natural alternatives than I used, but this worked for me, so I didn't add anymore supplements. That's what I started with and it worked. Good luck!
