Hi, i am new to the group, my name is niki and I was wondering if

someone could answer a few questions for me. I am due to have our 5th

son next weekish, and 2 weeks after that I am due to have major surgery

to remove the remainder of my teeth and insert dentures. My teeth are

bad enough to were they are only roots and stumps and will need to be

scraped, dug and cut out of my jawbone. I am sorry for the graphics. I

am not so worried about the medication during the surgery, but am

worried about teh pain after wordds and not being able to take the

medications afterwards while nursing. Has anyone ever gone thru this

while nursing, i will not take anything including ty3, and am wanting

to find a way to help manage the pain, I am loading up on clove oil.

Any thoughts would be greatly apreciated. Oh, i do not have the option

of waiting for the surgery, as my insurance will stop covering me when

the baby reaches 6 weeks old, is a pcap program in NY for pregant moms

who do not qualify for medicaid but cannot afford the $500 month the

other insurance wants....

Dear Niki, I nursed both my babies and it was worth every minute. I see the solution might be to stop for the duration of the surgery and aftermath or pain and use what works to kill the pain. Then, somehow detox the body before you nurse again. You could bottle feed, and then nurse again. You can stop and start again, if you are patient, and the baby is willing.

Isn't it terrible that we have to make medical decisions based on the insurance companies needs?

Perhaps there is a drug like Darvocet that is for after baby pain, but does not hurt the baby if the mother nurses? I used it for pain after episiotomy. Maybe you could take care of both issues at once. It would not hurt to ask. (And the generic version is cheap--like about $3 a bottle).

Also, there are many therapies for pain on this site, like EFT (acupuncture without needles) that will take away dental pain and many other ailments. Perhaps someone else on the site can tell you more ideas.

I think also that nursing gives the mom a natural pain coping mechanism so maybe it will be a little easier for you.

I hope so

Have a Beautiful Baby and Congratulations

in his Love

Hi and thanks so much for your advice. Yes, it is terrible that we

have to hop around for the insurance compnaies, I have put off my

teeth for so many years due to lack of insurance. It is just amazing

how much dentists and oral surgeons cost... or any kind of visit for

that matter. I had thought of expressing before hand maybe enough for

a couple days if I am to be on meds for pain, am hoping the baby will

go back to nursing at such a young age after having to take a

bottle...

Niki, That's a good idea. Don't worry too much about your baby going back to nursing. I even heard of a case where a grandmother was able to nurse her grandchild during a snowstorm in her car, so I know that you will be able to do it after a short break. It only takes about 1-3 days of nursing to completely eliminate a food or medication, I think, if you drink lots of water. You could also detox the liver by drinking cranberry juice, if you are worried.

When it's time, just keep offering. Even as "pacifier" when asleep. The baby much prefers you. And eventually you will be right back on track.

Take care

Athena

Hi Niki,

Besides clove oil, which should work great, I've also found rinsing

my mouth with tea tree oil mixed with water sometimes helps pain,

though I don't swallow. Also oregano oil w/water (which you can

swallow) has helped too.

Good luck with the surgery. I'll eventually end up with upper

dentures, somewhere down the road. If I think of anything else that

has worked re pain, I'll post!

just don't use clove oil without diluting it..it can damage your tissues.

That also goes for the oregano oil, but what I buy is already

mixed/diluted with olive oil.
