The history of Sama and whirling derwishes...

 

In the middle of the vast steppes of Central Anatolia lies Konya.

Konya is a traditional caravan stopping place, but was also the

capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum during the 13th century. Its

history goes back more than 4000 year. From 1240-1273 one of the

world's greatest mystic philosophers Celaledin Rumi Mevl & #259;na lived

here. His oecumenical teachings were summed up in this beatiful

verse:

 

Whoever you may be, come

Even though you may be

An infidel, a pagan, a fire-worshipper, come

Our brotherhood is not one of despair

Even though you have broken

Your vows of repentance a hundred times, come

 

The brotherhood founded after his death by his son Sultan Veled and

his other followers was called the whirling derwishes.
